JazzFest (banner image missing)

Before I go any further  - I really agonised over whether to submit this for the Jazz fest.  When I started this piece I was going for a feel like the Nina Simone song "How it would feel to be free."  I started with the piano - lots of sus2 chords and more timing changes than you could shake a stick at - perhaps a bit jazzy - ish.  Clarinet - yes, tick.

Then I started putting guitars and hammonds on it and, well...I'm not sure.  Anyway the intention was there so I'm happy to let you people decide if it is anywhere near the brief.  I honestly won't be offended.  I think it hangs together reasonably well whatever category it falls into.

I played most of the parts on my Motif XS7, including the drums (which were part programmed and part played on the keyboard, smashing my fingernails in the process).  The guitar parts were played on a strat, including my debut on bottleneck slide.  All the parts were recorded into Studio One 3 for mixing and general faffing around with.  The bit that took me most time was trying to work out the time signature of the intro/chorus sections.  I just kind of played it but then had to work it out to get the drums to fit!  I eventually decided it was 7/8, 6/8, 7/8, 3/8.

Anyway, I'd love to know what you think.

Progressive Jazz...I love it Paul! I agree with ORH on the Tull and Camel leanings. You have a very pro sound here....the guitars rock and the clarinet/flute jazzes! I think you hit the mark.

Wow - this is fantastic - a fine contribution to the Jazz fest, am hearing Tull as well (mainly through the guitar playing strangely enough, rather than the flute). I really, really, really enjoyed this piece. It grabbed me instantly and kept me engaged all the way through. Bloomin excellent, well done.

This is just stunning!! This is jazzrock at its best! Flutes, clarinet and guitars sound so good here! 10 points out of ten!!

Well written/performed song and the rhythm arrangement is real good. You're professional composer and musician!

Nice, Great...and "and Theydon Bois on bass."  ;D

Super track, lovely bit of jazzy, prog loveliness. Even though you have lots going on here, it hangs together really well and dosen't lose the plot, as jazz sometimes can IMO.

Lovely flute additions and a few great Steve Morse type runs on the old guitar.

Nice!
