I've got a video which I've recorded on a Sony Handicam (SX50) - I want to trim bits out so I don't give the jokes away but when I import it into Windows Moviemaker there's sound but no picture. Any thoughts? (I'm on Windows 10).

I don't know Hillary, I had the exact opposite issue last time I used WMM and my solution was to spend $40 on Wondershare Video Editor. Set up like WMM but has many more features, I love it.
Good Luck!

What format is your video in? If it's MP4, Windows Movie Maker is not compatible with that format according to Microsoft:

Why not give OpenShot a try:  http://www.openshot.org/.  It's free, open-source software and is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. It looks pretty good.

and that's why I hate windows! Best approach is to google it and read the forums - somebody would have had the same issue, and then try the suggestion. It will either be simple, or take weeks. Windows is a voyage of discovery! NB I'd record a really short video, and use that as a test, like 3 seconds or so. Then you can try different imports and playback options, once you get that to work - then you will know the settings for your setup. That's the best I can suggest!

Thanks for the replies - I have Googled it and read the forums and looked at the how to videos and they don't work but I'm happy to try a different video editor thanks

Good Luck Hilary, hope it works out well.
I'd love to help, but I'm about as good at video editing as I am at shaving.

Right well I tried to download Openshot from the link and it looked like there was an associated virus with the download, so I aborted.

I've tried iSkyesoft Video Editor - didn't like it (the easy option was horrific as in really naff!)

So I might bite the bullet and download Filmora (Wondershare) - I'll let you know how I get on!

Thanks for all your help.

btw - upgrading to Windows 10 was not my finest moment, if you're thinking of upgrading too quite simply don't

oh and Sharky - it appears we have the same nickname  :o ::) ;D

Well I did the video no problems and then can't seem to load it onto Youtube - doesn't recognise my email, doesn't recognise my password and then it came up with a disabled icon (because it thinks I'm retarded mentally challenged) which made me laugh . . .

You can't upload directly to Twitter either from the software which is a shame for me.

Happy days.

If only all I had to do was be funny I'd be laughing!

I want to upload the bloody joke because it's a 20 second joke with 17 seconds of laughter (if I wasn't retarded mentally challenged I could work out the ratio)  ;D

I tried "upgrading" Windows 10 on our laptop.  I've since reloaded Windows 7.  I bought a new desktop loaded Windows 7.  It came with a notice advising me NOT to upgrade to Windows 10.

I have not had a problem with mp4 files in the Movie Maker version that came with Windows Live.  The older versions (XP) did not recognize mp4.  I'm glad you found a solution to the video editing problem.

Good luck with the Youtube issue.  I am convinced that your problems are caused by Windows 10.  There are still some vendors carrying Windows 7.  You may want to reinstall and chalk up the cost to education.  When I "downgraded", all of my files were still available.  I backed up anyway.
