DARK END OF THE STREET - a cover of a cover

I'm not sure who did the original of this but it was an old soul song from the sixties.
It's been covered by Elvis Costello, The flying burrito brothers, Urethra Franklin among others.
The backing vocal is terrible.

I think it would be easier to list soul artists who haven't covered this tune - Clarence Carter did an epic version - but James Carr did it first.

It often amazes me just how many people there are with little or no discernable ability playing live whilst the talented stay home with their anxieties.
If you have the opportunity, for example, of playing at a so-called "open mic" event where each person has a fifteen minute spot - it removes such anxiety of having to carry an entire evening alone - I would encourage you to do so.
