Mr. Blue Sky - Kenny MacRobbo cover ELO

Started by Johnny Robbo, February 11, 2016, 06:11:17 AM

Fabulous guys, I was lucky enough to see ELO 2 which had all original members (except Jeff Lynne) on a couple of  occasions and this is just a wonderful cover. I wondered how you were going to do the vocoder parts, shouldn't have worried the pedal did it beautifully. Top, top class.   Willie

Another incredible job off capturing that time capsal quality, sounds as if it came from the same studio as the original. Kenny, your vocals are just stellar and I too dig that lead work. Talk about a tough cover, a dream team you 2 are!
Rock on!

Wow!  What a huge undertaking, and masterfully done!  I read through the 'how-you-did-it' blog and was very impressed with the musical know-how, attention to detail and organizational skill that went into this production.  And the recording just plain sounds like you're having a lot of fun and playing really good!  Some of the guitar parts especially stand out as more than excellent.  Congratulations!  This is a fun listen.

These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

When you pull Hooper out of lurk mode to comment, well that means you did something right my friends. That guy can record a f&@$?ing song.

Thanks chaps. ELO songs like this one were constantly on the radio as I was growing up, so they hold a lot of happy memories for me.  Then there was a time back in the late '80s/early '90s when Jeff Lynne seemed to be producing everybody... Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bryan Adams, Del Shannon & Dave Edmunds (to name but a few)... and then The Beatles (as well as the Travelling Wilburys project) so it occurred to me he must be a bit good! But about a year ago I saw a documentary about him and I realised what an amazing talent he is.

Hats off to Kenny for really pulling it out of the bag, vocal-wise, on this one. His lead vocal is superb (obviously) but what floors me with every listen are those falsetto backing vocals... his harmony singing is absolutely killer & he delivers it so effortlessly. Every now and then when I think about doing a vocal on something, I listen to someone like Kenny & think... "perhaps I'll just stick to being a guitarist! I know my place!"  :D

That is brilliant guys. Sounds amazingly full - hats off to the instrumentation. but those vocals are just great, they just make it. I can tell how complex this tune could be to reproduce and i know the feeling taking on something and then thinking... oh dear... how the f**k are my gonna do this. But, wow, this has turned out really brilliant.
