New Guitar Day - 61 Re-issue SG

I forgot to do one of these NGD posts before chrimbo... twas a new Baja Telecaster, the "60s" one, faded sonic blue with a rosewood board - kicks ass, might take a picture one day, etc, etc...

If I'd known what was about to come up, I'd NEVER have bought it (but I'm glad I did - how many geetars does one need? N+1 ).

Anyhoo, over the last week I was shaping up to check out an amp for my upcoming birthday pressie (expect a New Amp Day on 1st March ) and then suddenly I heard that Gibson was making the 61 Re-issue SG again and that a few were available in the UK.

I've wanted one of these for AGES. I bought a Faded SG years ago because I didn't think I deserved the 61 re-issue.

And then, when I went to look for a 61 a year or so ago I discovered that they'd been discontinued in 2012/13!

So... the other day I found that you could get these. There was much heart/soul searching... Mrs R went ahead with the amp idea for my birthday... I accidentally ordered the SG (offset against her overseas holiday next year )

It's the first time I've bought a guitar without trying it first. Luckily it's worked out ok...

drooling over here. saw one in my local guitar store just shy of £1400 but that includes a hardcase. maybe if i ordered one i could hide from the missus in that

Beware - if you order online, the tan case comes in a BIG cardboard box with Gibson written in BIG letters all over it and a BIG picture of a headstock (with Gibson written on it). The courier is likely to say (in a loud voice), "new guitar, eh?"

Don't worry, it wasn't that accidental, and I did get full permission, in writing, before ordering...

For this particular guitar, she was aware of how long I've been interested in it. At the moment, in the UK, they're called "Proprietary Run". In the US they're kind of appearing and disappearing, and they're not in Gibson's 2016 list of models... So it looked like a one off run for a US chain, some of which came to the UK, so it was "sh1t, if you want one, buy it NOW!". Since then, it looks like Gibson might actually have restored the model and are making them in general... The price is in the right ball-park for what they used to cost in 2012 and what the equivalent Les Pauls cost at the moment.

What she didn't tell me, when she said "get it", was that she's already organised her holiday for next year (she goes on holidays, I buy guitars, we try and keep the amounts roughly equal)

Cool guitar Andy - sounds great. Got me thinking - I have an old Epiphone G400 which is basically a copy of a 61 SG. If I "accidentally" bought a new SG and got rid of the Epi, Mrs C would be none the wiser!

Great buy and so soon after the Baja! Lucky Man !

Niice!!!

I got an Epi SG recently, nice noise, but it's a bugger to gig with when you're on keys as well. The headstock just dives when you let go of the neck.

But lovely neck.

My trick is to buy the cheapo version, i.e. Squier Strat and then replace it with a real one....
