I've been so busy with work I've not had time for Songcrafters for a couple of weeks. As well as work, I've had some technical problems which I'm gradually working through. But I have managed to record one song recently, although I think I'd like to immediately do it again (that's me).

In 2007 I was visiting my friend Helen in Auckland, and one morning in the shower this song just arrived, complete. Before I turned off the water I had the melody and all the lyrics. It's more than a little unusual for me as a non-singer, because it's mostly a capella. In many ways it's a sad wee thing.

The roses grow where the roses grow
And some grow in my love's garden
There I picked a bud in the midday sun
Without asking for your pardon

Yet the roses flower when the roses flower
And some flower in my love's garden
So I plucked a bloom in the afternoon
without any word of pardon

How the roses fade, how the roses fade
How they fade in my love's garden
I farewell them all
As the evening falls
And I never think of pardon

Only thorns remain in my love's domain
My ingratitude to harden
I embrace them all and they prick me raw
... and my blood shall be my pardon

Very nice song and presentation Leigh! I'd be tempted to add some ooo's and aaa's on the last verse of the a capella section or a harmony line here and there. But that's just me because it sounds fine as is. Very beautiful poetry in the lyric and when the piano enters, it's perfect!

I like this -I think it's great as it is
Sad and lovely -
The emptiness gives the song and melody effect I think-

Top class Leigh

Excellent. It would be great to hear you add some harmonies. Maybe starting on the 2nd verse
