I thought I'd post this. This is my first attempt at a 'Taksim' - improvisation on Arabian scales on the oud.  I mixed in some 'desert wind' in 'Audacity' to add a bit of atmosphere. I told my teacher that I feel this music in my blood but I haven't got the knowledge yet to express it. He is helping me with the knowledge! It's very complicated as the Arabs have quarter flats and quarter sharps as well as flats. I have always loved the sound of 'wrong' notes in Arab music. There's plenty of wrong notes in this and you have to know which wrong notes are right and which wrong notes are wrong.....if you know what I mean!

By the way, the wind keeps going after the oud stops...not my intention!

I never knew an oud had doubled strings. Are they all doubled?

Very cool timbre on the instrument, and it would seem to be you are getting handle on the scale in which you are working. Super hypnotic post. I'm kinda liking the wind continuing on as well.

Cheers Blooby!

The Arabian oud has doubled strings except the lowest sixth string. The Turkish oud has no sixth string and has a different tuning. My one is the Arab kind and it was an absolute nightmare to tune at first. I put little coloured stickers on the tuning pegs as I couldn't tell which peg went with which string.

There are several excellent online courses that I followed before finding a 'real' teacher. If anyone is interested I can give more details.

Lovely, atmospheric sounding instrument & your playing of it sounds superb. I'm fascinated by the whole topic of how we divide the octave into 12 equal steps (equal temperament & all that), and how we came to arrive at that system of tuning. It's always interesting to hear something which comes from a different musical perspective - it immediately sounds different and exotic.

A very soothing piece. Not an instrument or scale I know anything about so I couldn't comment on the wrong or right notes. I did however enjoy it as it was good to hear something totally different.    Willie
