Soulshine - MoO - 2016-01-07 C

We posted this five or so years ago back when I used to do it with a capo (I think on the 5th fret). The capo has been ditched, and now we have the Digitech vocalist device on this version. I mention it because this is a decent tune to represent its capabilities (or lack thereof depending on your world view). John has gotten skillful at popping it in and out without overusing it. The a cappella break was done by routing the guitar into the Vocalist first and then into a volume pedal. You can't hear it, but I'm quietly playing along with the guitar volume off, but the device can still track the guitar chords (which is how it forms the harmony notes). I just have to remember to play as close to silently as I can. Third MoO post in a row where John is killing it on vocals, especially once we hit the bridge.

This is how we opened our last gig. You can also gain some insight into the internal workings of John's mind (or lack thereof depending on your world view) as he begins with some a cappella Cole Porter.

Live from the house mixer into the Micro BR. The vocal reverb was printed, so I couldn't ease it back. I should have left a few more seconds on the end. We got one piercing clap (To be clear, one clap from one person that I could hear). It sounded almost sarcastic in its isolation.

Soulshine
Warren Haynes

When you can't find the light,
That got you through the cloudy days,
When the stars ain't shinin' bright,
You feel like you've lost you're way,
When those candle lights of home,
Burn so very far away,
Well you got to let your soul shine,
Just like my daddy used to say.

He used to say soulshine,
It's better than sunshine,
It's better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Hey now people don't mind,
We all get this way sometime,
Got to let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

I grew up thinkin' that I had it made,
Gonna make it on my own.
Life can take the strongest man,
Make him feel so alone.
Now and then I feel a cold wind,
Blowin' through my achin' bones,
I think back to what my daddy said,
He said, "Boy, in the darkness before the dawn:"

Let your soul shine,
It's better than sunshine,
It's better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Yeah now people don't mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Sometimes a man can feel this emptiness,
Like a woman has robbed him of his very soul.
A woman too, God knows, she can feel like this.
And when your world seems cold, you got to let your spirit take control.

Let your soul shine,
It's better than sunshine,
It's better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Lord now people don't mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Let your soul shine,
Oh, it's better than sunshine,
It's better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Yeah now people don't mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Fantastic cover and most excellent live performance from both of you, Blooby and John! The Digitech Vocalist sounds good on the backing singers. It has to be tricky getting the foot switching as precise as John did it. I'm wondering if John could hear your acoustic when you pedaled back the volume so he could hold the key? Either way he did well with the A Capella section. You most definitely should have included the audience applause to add to the liveliness of it. Nice one guys!

I can hear the guitar, but I don't need it.  I am quite comfortable singing a capella.  That's how I fill the time during Bruce's frequent refills and bathroom breaks.  It's interesting how one seems to follow the other.  Hmm.

I'm sorry... Did you just admit I'm your muse?

Actually, I was referring to the frequent refills and bathroom breaks.

Holy shit - that is brilliant. Fantastic. I'm a fan, I'd make a point to see you guys if I were in the vicinity. This is quality music, the lack of applause annoys me. :-(
There deserves to be whoops and hell yeahs at the end of this. More please.

Great stuff, chaps... Love that harmoniser, it sounds so natural & convincing, very "Eagles-y". Great performances from the both of you :)

Love the "Night & Day" intro... very "Tony Bennett" :)
