Thanks again, one & all... sorry I forgot to list the stuff I used:

Drums - Cakewalk Studio Instruments "slight beef" preset kit (my go-to drum kit)

Bass - My usual sub £100 no-name thing I got off ebay years ago.

Rhythm guitar - double tracked on my tele

Lead guitar - Harley Benton Les Paul

Bass & both guitars played through the Vox Tonelab ST on the "US HIGAIN" amp model which gives a really good old school Marshall sound - better than the actual Marshall models, I find. I just back the gain off when I record the bass, but it's pretty much the same settings.

Then I put a little compression on the bass and "Tiled Room" reverb (a patch in Cakewalk) on the drums & guitars. Then on the master output I use a tape simulator plug in which adds warmth & mimics the sound of recording to analogue tape at 30ips, as well as a little more compression just to smooth out the spikier peaks during drums fills etc.

Hope you all had a great Xmas... I'm just about recovering.  I can't party like I used to... good job this is only once a year  *=) *=) *=)
