Boss Micro BR First Steps - Part 1

So you have bought a Micro BR and are completely confused with it? Afraid to make some weird combination of buttons that will command the machine to self-destruct and create a sub-dimensional wormhole in your room? No? Ok...

When you first try to use the recorder it's normal to feel a litle overwhelmed It is a complex machine, remember that it does a lot of things.

First you have to plan what your going to record, a simple sung song accompanied by a guitar, an instrumental with two guitars, one rhythm and another solo or just a riff. Whatever it is, pratice it and plan it before recording. Altough just improvising when the time comes is just fine and can even have better results sometimes. In this tutorial series we assume that the user is going to create a simple song with two or more electric guitar tracks and a vocal track. We are not going to use Rhythm tracks.

What is needed?

   * An Electric Guitar (it's easier for a first project)
    * Jack Cable
    * Headphones
    * The Recorder

Procedure:

  1. Turn ON and let it load
   2. Press UTILITY
   3. Press TR1 (SNG)
   4. Press TR2 (NEW)
   5. Press TR4 (EXE) and let it load
   6. Now connect the headphones to the Phones/Line out and the Guitar on the jack input
   7. Play the guitar, you should hear it by now.
   8. Press EFFECTS and then with + or - choose another effect. When you're ok press EXIT
   9. Play your guitar (strum the open strings, do it with some strenght) while adjusting the INPUT Level on the right side so that OVER doesn't show and you hear your guitar perfectly. Overclip is what happens when you exceed the Input volume limit. You should try to avoid it while the volume level high. Lower the headhones VOLUME on the left if it's too loud.
  10. Now press the Record and when you're ready press Play to start recording. While you're recording the two symbols Play and Record are shown on the screen close to each other. When you're over press Stop.
  11. Now, let's hear it. Press the Stop and Rewind simultenously to pull the tape back and then choose Play. If you are not satisfied with the result and want to re-record, just press Stop and Rewind simultenously and repeat step 10.
  12. Now let's record another guitar track, the solo for example. Press Stop and Rewind simultaneously to rewind.
  13. Press the Recording circle and then choose TR2. It is now ready to record another track without erasing the first one.
  14. Press Play to start recording. When you're over, press Stop.
  15. Rewind by presing both Stop and Rewind simultaneously to listen to your work. If you're not happy, you can always re-record. But remember to do it in the right track, in this case, the second one.
  16. If you are satisfied with your work, you can move to the second part of this tutorial, here. If you want to continue recording tracks, just follow the steps 12 and 13, but be sure to leave a free track for the vocals..

On the second part of this tutorial, we are going to learn how to record vocals and how to mix the tracks.

If you have any doubts about this procedure ask your questions in the this forum.
