Mucking up PUP wiring

Some great sounds have been made by accidentally wiring the pickups arse-about-face. The Gary Moore/Peter Green Les Paul springs to mind. Judging by the track I've just listened to with your "dodgy" wiring, I would have left well alone... so the volume control doesn't work... you're a guitarist, why would you ever want to turn the volume DOWN? 

Funny that, I've found some knobs on my guitar, I've no idea what they do - as long as that as far clockwise as they can go - I'm happy!

Funny enough don't think I've ever used a tone control on a guitar-ever -:-\
Are they any good ?
