Simple set-up: Tanglewood acoustic, my trusty Fender Tele, bass and vocals. All recorded on the MBR with a bit of phaser added to the bridge parts in Audacity.

Lyrics:

The ghosts of my line
Lie in unmarked graves
In England's tangled undergrowth and rain

They were yoked to the soil
From dawn to evensong
But I carry the music they passed on

The serfs in the fields
With their dark age hearts
Medieval and weird
We've got dark age hearts
And when you look at the sky
You see dark age stars
But I'll try to love you even more
With this dark age heart

I'd burn the feudal manor down
With dancing bears and circus clowns
It may sound weird, but stick around
As floods consume the lower ground

The ghosts of my line
Would have loved you too
And how I weave these words
Bona-fide but blue

They were yoked to the soil
From dawn to evensong
But I carry the music they passed on

The serfs in the fields
With their dark age hearts
Medieval and weird
We've got dark age hearts
And when you look at the sky
You see dark age stars
But I'll try to love you even more
With this dark age heart

I'd burn the feudal manor down
With dancing bears and circus clowns
It may sound weird, but stick around
As floods consume the lower ground

Lovely song Tim. Love the first lines which make you think how most of our ancestors led short, hard lives spent working for the benefit of the few. perhaps time hasn't really changed things that much ?

Great listen !

Fascinating lyric in the historical anger at wasted lives and feeding the simple love-song.

Nice one.

Cheers.

It's based on the reality of trying to trace my farm-labourer relatives in villages across Hampshire, and finding that none of them even have gravestones - just names on birth and death records. Makes you think how lucky we are to be able to create things and maybe leave some trace of ourselves behind (because they didn't).

And I'm perpetually angry at the 'Lord of Manor' types - e.g. Downton fucking Abbey  :D

Wow...up there with "songs I wish I had written".
Love the lyrics and very well produced.

Holy Sh*t thats a good song.......personal, universal.........historical, modern..........its got girth...its the product of a brilliant songwriting mind at work...and it grooves along so nicely, so very listenable.

Excellent lyrical theme....ancestral ghosts. The music supports your melody...or the other way around...perfectly. The Tele has that unmistakable, clear Fender sound. I'm with Hook and Kari on the "song I wish I'd written" comments. Well done Greeny!
