MICRO BR- TROUBLE DELETING MP3S

Started by 66jag, April 10, 2009, 07:47:28 PM

HELLO FELLOW MBR USERS

i was able to transfer mp3s on to the MBR from the computer at one point but that was only once. now, i literally dragged all of the mp3s to the trash because i already transcribed them all, and now there are no mp3s in the "mp3" folder and it will not let me put any new songs, or even any of the old songs i already transcribed back in the folder. it simply says, "card full". but there is NOTHING on the card and it also says that all 122 MB are used up and i deleted EVERYTHING in the folder. it says i only have 416 KB available which is NOT TRUE. i dont understand what is going on. is there something else i that has to be done in order to actually delete the mp3s?? PLEASE HELP PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEEE

Kody

You know, you should try deleting the mp3 files on the MBR without hooking up to a computer.  Leave that devil machine PC out of this lol!  Sounds like there's got to be something on that card~ You should find out what it is and delete it within the MBR...maybe...or am I misunderstanding?

no, your not misunderstanding at all, the thing is, that now, when i turn my mbr on... there is nothing to delete because i did that on my computer

 :(

how do i delete things on there without hooking up to the computer??? im super illiterate with this kind of stuff... sry haha

Kody

No problem~ YOu gotta have the MBR in MP3 mode(push mp3 button 3rd button from the left on the bottom left)

Then, pick the song you want to delete..... hit UTILITY, SNG, ERS, then tell it YES....

Do you have a card reader on your computer so you can access the memory card directly without plugging your BR into the computer?  Try that.

Oh, Kody, have been listening to some of your stuff.  Love it.  Just can't place who your voice reminds me of.  It has been bugging me for a few days now.

So you don't have any MP3s on you're MBR ~ Your card must be full of song data~ Do you know how to check that? I mean, you should know what's on there, and it must be enough to fill your card~ I guessing you should start deleting SONGS if you don't need them anymore. You know, not in MP3 mode...I know I can help if I could understand the sitch a little better!

Oh while I was typing this Migs had a good idea too...

Thanks, Migs, by the way~

Oh, and using the computer to check your card is not mandatory, it's an option that some people prefer...

It is if you want to know exactly how much of it you've used.  But if it says card full~ well, LOL, duh~ it's full...lol That's my cue to start managing what I need and what I don't, freeing up useable space...I guess I just like staying away from mouse clicking when I can~ That's why I bought the MBR!~ ...

I remember, when I first got it~ a few weeks ago... I followed the directions in the manual to safely disconnect the MBR from the PC...and I ended up throwing my whole MP3 file in the Trash can~ I never could get it back~ But I was able to create a new folder, so I named it MP3...and I haven't followed the directions again~ I just copy files to and from the MP3 file for the MBR...and just disconnect it when I'm done....

Normal operation of the Micro BR depends on a certain folder structure and the existence of certain files. That's why you should never delete files from your memory card using your computer unless you are certain that you fully understand the BR folder structure and know which files it requires. You may have deleted important files and that's why you're now having trouble. Either that or you have filled the card with song data. The Micro BR has two basic modes -- multitrack mode and MP3 mode. The MP3 folder holds all of the MP3 songs used in MP3 mode, and the ROLAND folder holds all of the files and folders for the songs you've recorded in multitrack mode. You've deleted everything from the MP3 folder, but the ROLAND folder could easily hold enough song data to fill the card. If that's the case, then you need to backup the card and erase some of the songs you're finished with to free up some space. You mentioned 122MB which suggests that you're using the 128MB card that came with your Micro BR. That card might only hold two or three multitrack songs, depending on the song length, number of tracks used, etc. So, you might want to consider buying a 1GB card. They are fairly inexpensive, and they will hold a lot more songs than the 128MB card.

The first thing you should do is make a complete backup of your memory card. The best way to do that is to right-click on the ROLAND folder and select Copy from the context menu. Then create a new folder on your computer where you want to store the backup. Right-click in this new folder and select Paste from the context menu. The files and folders will begin copying from the Micro BR to your computer. When it's finished, you can use a similar procedure to copy the MP3 folder from the Micro BR to your computer (unless it's empty or there's nothing in it you want to keep).

After you're certain that you have a good backup, you should Initialize the memory card (see page 115 of the Micro BR manual, 3rd edition). This will erase everything from the card and create the required folder structure and files for a single new song. The Micro BR should now work normally and have plenty of available space.

After the initialization is complete, you can restore the backup to the card, if desired. Right-click on the ROLAND folder in the backup folder of your computer and select Copy from the context menu. Then right-click on the drive icon for the Micro BR and select Paste. The files will begin copying from the computer to the Micro BR. When it's finished, you should be able to access any songs you restored from the backup. However, the card might be full again. If it is, you will need to erase one or more of the songs to free up some space (see page 58 of the Micro BR manual, 3rd edition).

I don't recommend drag & drop for copying files in Windows. The trouble with drag & drop is that it sometimes copies the files and sometimes moves them (erasing the original files). It's usually not clear to the user whether Windows will copy or move, and it's very easy to accidentally move files when you thought you were only copying them, and not realize the mistake. You can really mess things up if you move important files out of the folder they're meant to be in. That's why I always recommend using the copy & paste method to copy files, as described above. This way, you're in control and you don't have to guess what Windows will do. Copy & paste always copies, and Cut & paste always moves.
