I am a merry ploughboy and I plough the fields all day
Till a sudden thought came to me head that I should roam away
For I am sick and tired of slavery since the day I was born
And I am off to join the rebel band and I am off tomorrow morn.

And we're all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bay'nets flash and the riffles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun.

I'll leave aside me pick and spade, I'll leave aside me plough
I'll leave aside me horse and yoke, I no longer need them now
I'll leave aside me Mary, she's the girl that I adore
And I wonder if she'll think of me whe hears the riffles roar.

And we're all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bay'nets flash and the riffles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun.

And when the war is over, and dear old Ireland is free
I'll take her to the church to wed and a rebel's wife she'll be
Well some men fight for silver and some men fight for gold
But the rebels are fighting for the land that the foreinger stole.

And we're all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bay'nets flash and the riffles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun

That brings back memories. My dad had a 45 rpm single of this song by an Irish group from Brampton, Ontario, Canada called "The Carlton Showband". It was a Top-10 hit (#2) in Toronto in August 1966 (49 years ago). The 'B' side was "Reilly's Daughter" ("Giddy-i-ay, giddy-i-ay, giddy-i-ay for the one-eyed Reilly"). :)

The record label credits Dominic Behan, although I think he only modified the original lyrics to make them Irish. You see, the song was originally English and is believed to have been composed originally by John J. Blockley in the 1870s.

THE SCARLET AND THE BLUE
(John J Blockley)

Once I was a merry ploughboy going to plough the fields all day,
Till something came across my mind: I'd like to run away,
For I was tired of country life and the places I had seen,
So I came to be a soldier for Her Majesty the Queen.

Chorus: Hurrah for the Scarlet and the Blue and the helmets a-glittering in the sun
And the bay'nets flash like lightning to the beating of the old bass drum.
Hurrah for dear old England and her flag that's waving 'gainst the sky,
When the Captain of the Reg'ment says, We'll conquer or we'll die.

So I threw aside my old white slop and I threw aside my hoe,
I threw aside my old white slop no more to reap or mow.
No more I'll work in the harvest fields or go to reap the corn,
For I've been and took the shilling, boys, and I'm off tomorrow morn.

Ch.

I'm going to leave my mother, I am going far from her,
I know that she will miss me, for I'm her darling boy.
And if ever I return again I'll let them all see me,
With a star and medals on my breast a soldier brave I'll be.
