Studio One just released 3.0. There is a load of new audio content, a new polyphonic synth and a major upgrade to an old one, an arpeggiator, a chorder (for us keyboard-challenged types), a bit crusher, a Leslie effect, and a scratch pad/arranger. Since I have audio attention deficit disorder and mostly create by improvisation, I am pretty stoked about the latter. The program and even the upgrade aren't cheap, but I may pull the trigger this weekend.

I think this feature may be a game changer for me. Check out how cool this is. Skip to about 2:00 to get to the meat of it.

I've done it, and have even upgraded to the Professional version.  I started with the "free" Artist version - bundled with the Presonus studiobox 1818vsl interface that I bought and loved it enough to pay the extra £209 for the Pro upgrade.  I am really enjoying it and have to say that the learning curve has not been anywhere as daunting as I had feared.  The software seems totally stable albeit I am running it on a quite powerful desktop PC.

A few niggles:

1.  You download the software and don't even get a dvd with the software on.  Call me an old Luddite but come-on!  Nothing physical for your cash - not even a idiots-guide handbook to read in bed!  In fairness, there is no shortage of instructional material on the manufacturer's website and youtube etc but I can't help but think that a dvd and book in a box would be nice and, frankly, I would be prepared to pay more for it.   Also, to be fair, I don't think that the download-only option is unusual as it appears that most of the big boys do the same.  In fact it would appear that most of the competition are pushing customers towards the monthly subscription - rental in effect - for their software.  I think this is an outrage and was one of the reasons I went the Studio One route.

2.  The download took hours.  I totally accept that this is not the fault of the software and is  a function of my broadband speed.  I am too mean to go for the fibre-optic internet connection.  I had to wait til the middle of the night to get it done -when all the rest of the population stopped watching pornography or whatever it is they download off the net!

3.  The wife is making me sell some of my gear which means that I am having to do the Ebay thing.

You will note that I haven't mentioned any niggle with the software itself.  That's because I don't have any yet.  It is great.  I love the BR1600 and have produced some reasonable music on it, but I think for me also, a great DAW like Studio One will be a game changer.  If anyone is tempted, my advice is go for it.

I should also say that I might go a bit quiet for a while whilst I disappear into a darkened room and immerse myself in the luxury of unlimited tracks, side bad compression etc.....
