London Sites?

So "the fam" and I are cutting through London for a few days in June.

Any recommended sites?

I wonder if there are any cool kid-friendly jazz clubs or chill out music places for after a long day of walking around...?

....I know "kid-friendly" can be the challenging bit, I'm not worried about the kids behavior (ages 10 and 16)... I just don't want to get in any bar fights this time, or get strange looks from people for me cramping their style

Also going to be in Paris... so I have the same question for that town.

I never been to England or France so I can't help you out with places of interest to visit but there has to be someone at songcrafters that can recommend a few spots to hit...even if it is just pubs, lol! Good luck with the trip..... I'm sure you'll have a great adventure.

I could have helped you 30 years ago, these days I'm a tourist in London. (I don't suppose the Pogues still play at the Kennington Oval?)

I'd recommend seeing some musicals, Matilda's really good. Apart from that, I only really know the comedy clubs (definitely not suitable for children)  :'(

There are loads of things to see outside of the musical experience, there are some fabulous museums and galleries.

I would personally recommend the Natural History and Science museums, the Victoria and Albert museum is quite close to these too and has some great clothing in - David Bowies outlandish stuff was in there a while back, it may have gone now, but worth a look.

The National Gallery has some of the worlds finest paintings, the Tate Modern has some funky stuff in it, and Kraftwerk played in the generator hall a couple of years back - just go to experience the space, it's impressive.

The Tate Gallery has some modern works by the likes of Tracey Emmin and the 'enfant terrible' Damien Hurst - another worthy of a few hours.

Paid stuff...

The London Dungeon - disturbing enough to psychologically damage any kid, Madame Tusauds, mix with the rock legends of the past and present, London Eye - see the skyline from a unique perspective and Westminster just across the river and...

Don't miss the pubs in places like Soho, the Crown and Two Chairmen being one of my favourite, Covent Garden, and then there are the public parks, St. James' with it's walk up to the Palace, Green park where Osckilo and I sat and played guitar to the passing public, Hyde Park with it's nutters spouting garbage at Hyde Park Corner, Regents Park with London Zoo...

Then there's Camden Lock with it's alternative and sometime bohemian life to browse around and Notting Hill, Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park, the list is endless.

Best of all is to get off the tube at Tower Hill and walk west along the direction of the Thames, exploring is the best thing, I still find little gems hidden away despite having done just that for the last 30 years or so. You can walk all the way to Hammersmith if you want to.

Hook

Everyone gets a backpack, a compass and a direction. Walk a few hours and then try to find each other. It'll be fun!
Rock on!

Definitely second that. I've been twice. (And we kinda named our daughter after it, too)

You can walk over the roof of the O2 Arena which is quite good fun although you have to book in advance.  If you get down that end of London, the cable-car over the Thames is quite something.

I too moved away from London about 30 years ago and don't get down there often these days.  I still need the occaisional fix, though!
