Headphones...help please

Started by D28 boy, March 30, 2009, 05:19:53 AM

I've just bought a BR Micro from e-bay & need to get some Headphones sorted as well. Can someone please recommend a good cheap pair to start with. What size jack is req'd, is it like an MP3 player or a 1/4 inch jack?

Appreciate any advice

Tony

The Micro BR has a 1/8th jack like mp3 players.  Headphones are very personal but I recently bought some Ultrasone iCans.  They have a great sound and terrific spatial sense.  They are very comfortble for long periods of time.  They are open headphones and some people don't like that but that is an absolute necessity for my circumstance.  I have sworn off earbuds forever.  I like the iCans and they were worth the money, I reckon.

One thing to consider is that if your using a click while recoring with a microphone (built-in or other) is that the click might be audible if your using open headphones, so it's a good idea to have some closed ones for that purpose.

Why so ?

I use Shure earbuds (which I highly recommend even tho a little costly) and bought them specifically so I can cut out external noise and hence pump lower actual volumes into my eardrums.

I had a scare not long ago when I had a very painful ringing in my ears that would not go away.  I thought that I had been standing too close to my drummer who had been knocking seven colours out of the bell on the crash cymbal.  It turned out not to be that and I eventually put it down to too many hours with earbuds (iPod buds and Sony buds).  I bought the iCans and I feel a lot better.

It might be superstition but I am tired of sticking things in my ears.  As far as I'm concerned, we haven't the experience of using them for long periods to know what the effects might be.  And they are more invasive than headphones.  But as they say, your mileage will vary.

Mobile/cellphones will kill us all before earbuds get us

I care about dying like anyone else (and I'm sure that my mobile phone is plotting against me) but I'll be very upset if my ears go before the rest of me.

I think we are on the same page.  In another life I used to teach physiology and do hearing tests.  I knew back then I had a high frequency deficit and it showed in my testing.  I also know that I have a slight full frequency left deficit.

On both counts, it doesn't affect anything from day to day.  I do miss some of the quality in the music I listen to.

This is why I use in-ear.  It does take a lot of discipline not to turn things up to 11 and pop an ear drum.
