A 'specialized' kind of sound, but one which isn't obvious as not being a bass until you listen, is the 'bass' on 'I Will' on the White Album.

McCartney doubles the bass with his voice (genius); he's singing 'Du, du, du, du'. It really works and is a very cheap alternative to all other methods of bass reproduction, if you ask me.
