The Devil Is Due

Well the sun is going down
and the sky is cold and grey.
And for his life so sweet, there's a dated receipt,
and the devil is due today.

Music Break

She was known as the toast of the town.
And getting richer each song she played.
For a life of excess and greed, she made a deal in concrete,
and the devil is due today.

Music Break

So, don't cry for me now.
For, I must be on my way.
For this life so unreal, I too made a deal
and the devil is due today.

Bridge
You see, you're not alone on this desolate road,
We're a mix of back wood hicks and city types.
And though our prayers were all different, we paid the same price,
selling our souls, at the crossroads of life.

Nelson, you amaze me. You are one gifted songwriter. I don't think i have ever heard a tune of yours i didn't like, but this one is up near the top of favs. Why?

Excellent lyrics, wonderful instrumentation played with just the right touch, and those vox. There are several very good singers on this site but there's something about the timbre/tone of your voice that is just magical. You make every song sound special with it.

The harp and the keyboard (i think?) together make a cool mix. The groove is perfecto for the tune.
Five stars for this little gem..and a definite spot on your upcoming album!!

What a great morning at Songcrafters & the hits just keep coming. Your the consummate storyteller my brother, no one weaves a yarn like you do. Your voice is always comforting & captivating, like catching up with an old friend. I love this and all your tunes brother.

This is the tops Mr. Nelson! So simple is the complex message. The song is endearing and appealing with the your excellent vocal delivery and meaningful words. The harmonica sets a sort of joyful mood of "oh well we made our bed now it's time to lay in it". I strive to write songs like this but never seem to quite get there. I'm envious of your writing and performing gifts!

FuzzFace

Wow this is a stellar song and recording.
It's quality is Dylan-esque with a touch of early Dire Straits finesse...

Real nice!

What a corker of a tune, Nelson! Great vocals & guitar as always, and I loved those tasteful harmonica breaks. Dig the folk flavor... :)

Alex
Thanks a bunch, I try not to disappoint.  :)

Hook
Positive thoughts from a pro is always cool, but from one who's such a kick ass artist him self... well that keeps me motivated.
BTW That was an informative piece you wrote, giving us a peek into the life of a gigging pro.
As you stated...... not a rock star but a gigging professional.

Bruno
I appreciate it.
Man you've been blowing up the joint as of late... with some real sweet axe work.

Farrell
Appreciate your time, brother. Just like you gotta pay the piper -- the devil's gonna get his, eh? :)
I think you did a bang up job on "Growing Rage".

FuzzFace
Very nice of you to swing by and thank you for the kind words.

Cuthbert
Good to hear from you.
Yeah, you can't go wrong with a good folksy joint.  :)

I know it's a fairly small part but that bass line works really for me. Simple and a perfect fit. Your vocal is great as always. I like the arrangement and that fade out at the end was nicely done. The dropping of the drums, the fade out except for the melody line... I wouldn't have thought of that.
