Quote from: oldrottenhead on September 21, 2014, 06:43:13 AManyway sorry to all the others here about all the politics of late, i'm sure i've pissed lots of you off, but i can't help writing songs about what i am feeling.
Music is the window on the soul, without passion and belief, it is nothing. Keep doing what you are doing Jim - aka ORH :-)

Phew - I read this before listening. There is some passion in all these words - music is the great healer. MET on! This i s a fantastic song, mainly because of the feelings in it, they come across loud and clear.
Magic.

Peace to all my songcrafter brothers.

The problem with that, Jim, for us, is that down here we feel in exactly the same boat. As far as I can make out, not much difference - my vote never counts, I rarely get the government I vote for, and... there are folks falling further and further behind the curve here too.

BUT... we don't have this option of independence.

Our understanding is that if Yes had won, the UK was broken. So, sadly, there's only one way for us to read a vote on independence down here - our entire perception of what was going on, regardless of the motives/reasons up there, was ... not good. It couldn't possibly be seen any other way down here.

HOWEVER - with the way it's panned out... perhaps there is now going to be change... perhaps, considering what they're going have to do in order to honour what they said, my vote might actually end up meaning something...

That's why I feel hopeful.

Unfortunately, it'll take a while to sort out... just been watching the news here - they're all keen to uphold their vows, but they don't want to be f***ed over by each other... and WE don't want one party f***ing the other party or parties over. I don't yet know where I stand on the arguments they're having, I know what the arguments are - and I can already see "Tory shits" playing the game (I should actually be a Conservative, btw, but I haven't voted Conservative for decades because I cannot STAND the guys/gals I regard as "Tories" - I suspect these are mostly the same people that you have the same issues with - they just don't seem to care about or even consider what happens to the underdogs...)

Anyway, that's why I say "keep doing what you have to do". Keep talking, keep saying it out loud. But do be aware of the perception that many English guys and gals have about the events of the last few weeks. Whether you intended it or not, we felt in danger of being utterly betrayed by people who are our equals and who face the same problems we do... that's how we felt, and that will need to be borne in mind and addressed by the folks north of the border who are saying Westminster must be held to their vows - otherwise those who felt betrayed, who are not in Westminster, won't hear you properly...

I'm still hopeful, though... :)

for me one of the saddest things to come out of the referendum was the realisation, that the BBC is not the impartial organisation it is held up to be. that was finally confirmed to me like a nail through my heart, as to how the BBC at first chose not to report events on Friday night, a pattern they followed throughout the referendum campaign.

no mention of tens of thousands of joyful revellers in the streets and cities throughout scotland, instead we got stage managed better together tv opportunities most often behnd closed doors to invited and often shipped in audiences. the blatant lies and propaganda reached such heights that at least 6 thousand people had an all singing and dancing protest outside bbc scotlands offices, which was reported as 350 protestors intimidating journalists.

but as i say friday put the nail through my heart, at first the bbc where on the spot when trouble kicked off. but the cameras went to something else. not until about 10.45 pm on  reporting scotland wasit mentioned. but was described as some scattered incidents and firecrackers thrown. i kid you not. whilst at precisely the same time over 700 unionist thugs had turned a city that all this year has been admired into what looked like something from northern ireland at the height of the troubles. on saturday afternoon, police scotland posted this.

QuotePOLICE SCOTLAND STATEMENT – GEORGE SQUARE – FRIDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2014

Statement from Chief Superintendent Andy Bates

"More than 700 hundred people gathered in George Square last night and officers arrested six people for a number of public order offences.

"An investigation into Friday night's disorder has begun and an incident room has been set up at Glasgow City Centre Police Office, staffed by officers dedicated to identifying and arresting anyone involved in the ugly scenes witnessed across the world on television and social media.

"We have already secured valuable CCTV and other evidence which I am confident will lead to further arrests in the coming days.

"Don't think that because you were not arrested by last night that you will not be caught. If you were involved in any criminality in the square we will identify you and you will be arrested.

"I would ask that anyone who has any information that could assist us with our enquiries to contact officers via the non emergency number 101."
only then did the bbc describe the extent of the trouble and still described it as pro yes and pro no factions fighting. which couldn't be further from the truth.

a more factual account of events can be found here

anyway i digress. on the night of the results, i watched the bbc broadcasts from england. i have virgin media and you can watch broadcasts from the different regions. i watched what was shown in london. this was obviously before the stuff on friday. i thought we were being lied to in scotland, but the propaganda on the english regional version i watched of the BBC was in a different league altogether.ione particular "fact" that kept arising was how "England" not the "UK" subsidised Scotland. a little research will reveal that this is a fallacy too and has been every year for the last 32 years at least. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/scotland-is-as-important-to-the-uk-as-texas-is-to-the-us-2014-09-16

if one good thing has arisen from the referendum, the scottish electorate are an informed one, to quote Kevin Bridges "after this referendum 90% of the scottish public could sit a modern studies degree and pass with honours".   ;D ;D ;D

On a lighter note, I have written and recorded three new songs today. None of them overtly political . Unfortunately I have no internet where I am right now. No I'm not at The labour party conference throwing eggs .

So tomorrow I'll post two of them. Was my intention to post them in chronological order but I'LL post them in reverse order cos I think the songs got better as as I went along. Well better than my usual low standards.

I hope I'm not fanning the flames as that's not my desire...

This whole topic is something that signifies different things to different people...

I have learned that one cannot blame other people for wanting to shape their destiny, whether you agree with their approach or not, but the most important thing for everyone is trying their best.

In political matters there is no single best way... it can be argued and debated but the worst is when efforts to make a difference are not given a chance... Everyone can be inspired by the chance that this topic for Scotland has been given, and the chance that UK still has to make improvements where it counts...

It takes braveness on either side of an issue to accept and ultimately work with reality

I don't live there but I sincerely hope it's in the cards and players to turn this into a win/win... maybe it sounds trite but that is the best we should always hope for... without being married to 1 single ideal/solution to the exclusion of all others.

...and without letting our significance of an issue blind us to where others involved are coming from

Geir

In my lifetime there's been 2 referendums in Norway, that were kinda opposite of what you had now. Both in '72 and '94 we voted on whether or not we should join the European Union. ...... What's similar tho' is that both referendums split the population down the middle (46.5%/53.5% in '72 and 47.8%/52.2% in '94). As we don't discuss politics here :) I won't reveal what I voted in '94, but I do know that whatever side you were on it won't take long until all is well ..... friends will still be friends ... and you'll still help the neighbour that voted different than you when he get's locked out of his house. ...... The fact that it was such a close call, means that a lot of people are uncertain of what's best and that probably no one knows ! You will find your way and you will dance in the streets one day .. together.

nice song James !

Cheers Geir. I think you know me well enough to know that I have nothing against my friends that voted no. My problem is not with them but with The powers that be.to win the vote they made vows. Which it now appears will not be kept.many of my friends voted no as a result of this vow made a day or so before the referendum. So things probably won't settle down until that vow is honoured. People who voted no under false pretexts will be extremely angry if the vow is not honoured in full.

Love those chord changes and bitter-sweet melodics in the vocal. A real peach of a song, and the bass sounds fab: unobtrusive and classy. Onwards and upwards - don't let the bastards grind you down.
