Here's my second submission for the Peelfest, it's a song from a band from just up the road from me, Young Marble Giants.

Having said in a recent post that I'm trying to get guitar into my songs now, this one hasn't any, despite the original being nearly all guitar and vocal.  It's a quiet song and I don't do quiet very well in my recordings so that was also a challenge.  The vocal was quite challenging for me, I don't have the angelic voice that Alison Statton has, and breathing was an issue.  Having said all that I'm quite happy with the result, it's quite different for me.

This one could arguably be a double fester, being about the nuclear holocaust, something which I remember used to concern us greatly back in the late 70's early 80's cold war times.

Original session track recorded 18th August 1980, transmission 26th August.

Mmmm, a strange yet intriguing little ditty ! I had to listen to this 3 times in a row as there's something vaguely familiar about it but I don't know what. Perhaps I heard it on the John Peel show that night in 1980.  I like the sounds you've used and the vocal - its compelling me to have another listen.

Well performed and nicely recorded, Nick.  Beautifully sparse and etherial which works really well.

This is damn good. Don't know the original so can't compare or reference it in any way. But as a new song to me, it's really arresting and interesting. Sparse but with a sweet and intimate kind of warmth. Love all your synth tones and the rhythm sound. Was disappointed when it finished!

Thanks Pete, Alex, Paul and Tim.  'Preciate the comments.

Must admit to being a bit ambivolent about it myself.  The original is on my iPod (Rough Trade Shops Post Punk vol1 I think) but I wasn't particularly familiar with it until I set about it.  I wanted the challenge of making a quiet song.  I think I muat be more of a rocker than I thought, though.

Loved the quirkiness of this, and the sparse sound. This is great, love it.
