With a nod to Hook's extant version of the song, here's my version of Rescue Me by Fontella Bass for the John Lennon Jukebox.

I wanted to do it in a different style.  Soft Cell were one of my big influences and they used to use a lot of 60's soul as inspiration so I thought I'd use them as a driver in my cover.  Although to be fair the resemblance turned out to be a passing one.

It's all done in my phone, mostly GarageBand.  The drum machine is a sim of the CR-78 off of DM-1.  It's the machine that Visage used on Fade to Grey and others.  I'm a bit geeky when it comes to vintage drum machines.
I was influenced by Hook's version in the vocal delivery.  His style is relaxed and I tried not to over-sing it, which is what I usually do.  It's more in my 'range' than some other songs I've done lately and I'm quite happy with the result.

Rambling now...

Very cool version brother, I dig the sparseness of the backer & your vocal is really good man. Like you said, quite relaxed & natural. This is a great song for you!

Very, very good this, and I love the fusion between the 60's style and the 80's sound....works surprisingly well.

Have to agree that the vocal is spot on, and every note you are singing sounds so comfortably within your range, and you dialled it into mix at just the right level.

Good choice, suits you sir!

Oh I absolutely love this - great arrangement and love the approach on the vox, it's perfect for the song.

One of your best (and they're all great!)

Excellent Nick! I like the easiness of the entire sound.....no strain, no pain, just gain. Great vox on this!

Test, test, one, two, three.....is this mic on?

Yep, this one's a real corker!

Great vocals, and I too dig the 80s treatment of a 60s standard, and always a big fan of the vintage rhythm units - it all works together so very well here.

Well done, sir.

Great version.  All done on a phone?  What's the world coming too?  Magic that's what I say!

I get the Soft Cell, Tainted Love, Bedsitter drum machine thing going on.
Love it. Good vox too.
I also love the DM1 & vintage drum machines too. Used to have a Sound Master Sr88 & later a Boss TR606 (many moons ago)

Maybe a Soft Cell cover could be on the horizon ... I'm thinking Say Hello Wave Goodbye ... Hmm
