additional comments on SONY ECM-DS70P?

I couldn't resist so bought one from one of the UK suppliers on Ebay - excellent I reckon - I just whack it inside the soundhole and it sounds spot on!  Bit of blu tack to hold it in place inside and it sounds nice!  Maybe I'm just lucky! :)

that's great idea-you could adapt that idea for playing live i'd bet-using the MBR as a pre amp

Hello,

My ECM-DS70P arrived this last friday, just in time for the monthly jam that I have been attending at a friends house (last month I had just gotten the BR, this month the new mic).  The mic did well, after I remembered to turn the external plug in power on after creating a new song.  It is very sensitive, providing a nice strong signal.

I wonder which room / effect setting would be optimal for live acoustic music?   I also experimented with some different placements at home recoding acoustic, it seems to work just fine.

The mic did not come in original Sony packaging, but a small plastic bag, along with the extension cable (cloth insulated cable, very nice).

Not bad for $10.00 (us) ...

I have the hiss sorted now, not having needed to use noise suppression before it took a few tries, but so far prefer the built in mike. Maybe because I am used to it, or maybe it masks my many inadequacies? Will try the mike again for the acoustic once i have better strings on.

one of these days i'm gonna try tacking the mic inside -someone here said they had good luck with that

Twas me :)

Worked really well for me - if you can get it there, by forcing it through, stick it on the back wall of the guitar.  Seemed to get a nice ring to it then.

They're so cheap you could actually buy one to stick there properly, with tape and everything to hold the leads in.  Might do that actually.

not a bad idea-i dropped mine inside just to fart around with it-i could hear the possibilities-next time i change strings-
you could probably use that set up in a live situation- using the mbr for a sort of a poor man's acoustic pre amp

Just an update on this cool little mic. I've had it for a few months now and it's set up well enough although I'm still constantly tweaking this and that. For a 5 piece rock(ish) band playing in a 15x18 carpeted room, I have it haning from the ceiling in the center of the room, about level with the PA speakers and only 2-3' in front of the drums. Sensitivity has to be set awfully low around -15 and the input level is at an abysmal 65%. Still, it all comes in pretty darn clear. There is mild clipping when things get loud but using a compressor helped with that quite a bit.

Its just amazing how well it picks up all the nuances of the drums, and still picks up the bass, guitar, keys and vocals quite well. I'm currently experimenting with different EQ/COMP/Noisegate settings for that perfect sound. But for the purpose of recording rehearsals, it's just plain brilliant. Comes in crystal clear and is almost, studio quality. I wouldnt cut an album this way, but i've certainly heard albums that have sounded much worse. I'm sure tweaking the mastering effects will help too but as it is... its awesome!

That is all.

HWIC,

Have you tried dangling it above the drums? I have not tried this myself but I know that many studios when micing the drums with just one mic hang the mic above the kit. I think this deadens the bass drum a little and gives the drums a crisp sound.
