Tom Waits Inquiry

Blooby

I have only been exposed to the gravely-voiced Tom Waits, which just doesn't do it for me.  I erroneously assumed he always sounded like this.  I was stunned by some of his music last night, but the guy who had it didn't know the album's name.  Could one of you kind sirs point me in the direction of some of his earlier stuff? It is obvious I have been missing out.

Try:

Ruby's Arms
Heart Attack and Vine

However, I'm not sure who the non-gravelly voiced Tom Waits would be.

cheers,

Ian

Thanks, guys.  I'm starting chronologically as I figured he would be less gravely the farther back you go. I will pay special attention to your picks.

Here you go, Ian...

I've not listened to much of Tom Waits either Blooby. Like you I assumed he always had that gravel in his voice. The opening song on this album, My Ol'e 55...I think that's the name, was covered by The Eagles. That is the only version I've heard until now. I'm surprised by the clearness of Tom's vocals. It's also great song.

Test, test, one, two, three.....is this mic on?

Hook

I like most Tom Waits but Night Hawks At The Diner (Live) is my favorite, followed very closely by Small Change. "Step Right Up" is such a great song but this tune always makes me happy!

This is the only Tom Waits song that I'm familiar with. They used to play it on Much Music (Canada's music video station) back in the eighties.
