As I walked out in the streets of Laredo,/As I walked out in Laredo one day,/I spied a young cowboy all wrapped in white linen,/All wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay.//I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy./These words he did say as I boldly walked by./Come sit down beside me and hear my sad story./I was shot in the breast and now I must die.//T'was once in the saddle I used to go dashing,/Once in the saddle I used to go gay./First down to Rosey's and then to the card house./Got shot in the breast and I'm dying today.//Get six jolly cowboys to carry my coffin./Get six pretty maidens to sing me a song./Take me to the valley and lay the sod o'er me,/For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong.//Oh beat the drums slowly and play the fife lowly,/Play the death march as they carry me along./Put bunches of roses all over my coffin,/Roses to deaden the clods as they fall.

I inherited my father's guitar a couple of years ago. It's a cheap Mexican nylon string thing. He never really learned to play it very well, and he pretty much stopped playing around the time he remarried. My half brothers never heard him play.

But I remember him watching Folk Guitar with Laura Weber on public television, and trying, in particular, to learn "Streets of Laredo."

Folk Guitar with Laura Weber

When his guitar and songbooks became mine, I decided my first project with it would be to arrange and record Laredo. There are many versions and variations of this song, and some have more verses than others. I decided to ignore them all and play the melody as I remember my dad singing it (although the melody of Marty Robbins' version was probably the one he knew best). And I decided to only use the verses from the Laura Weber songbook, as my dad would have. I did take some liberties with the key and the chords.

Very interesting story and a nice tribute to your dad. I enjoyed the spare (yet engaging) arrangement (nice bass work, too...is it a fretless?), and the direct vocal performance. Well done, Ted!
