Internet Speed Issue/Question

Had to get a new modem, and my Internet speeds have dropped off about 75%.  I have determined it's not defective (and is capable of very fast speeds), and the cable company has checked things on their end. I'm assuming it's some sort of setting, but I'm not sure what to do next.

And ideas?

Thanks in advance.

IMO, you have to get into the modem setup and compare it with what your ISP recommends. The problem is there, I think.

Is it a wireless modem? if so, make sure your security is enabled and properly configured. Otherwise, one or more of your neighbours could be stealing your bandwidth. If you go into the setup for your modem/router, there should be a list of all the currently-connected devices. Make sure they're all yours.

There are also some programs available to monitor who's connected to your computer. I've never used them and I don't know if they're trustworthy, but they might be worth considering.

You can also check your current connections with the netstat command but the results can be difficult to interpret.

What speed is the modem reporting? There should be counters for up and down stream connection rates.

If these are less than you expect, it could be the phone line. Some modems tollerate noise more than others. If you're on fiber, ignore that whole last post thing.

The UK uses 1920's phone infrastructure in some places. Other places are not so modern.

Aparently Wales has 3 internet connections and its not that big a place.

Thank you so much for responding, all of you. There is no router, and I've discovered the problem is with torrent downloads (By the way, BT Etree is all trade-friendly bands, and there is some great stuff there, especially if you're into jambands). Speed test was 5mb/s+.

I have downloaded new torrent client software, and the same thing is happening.  Whereas I used to get close to 3 mb/s, now I'm "capped" at about 675 kb/s.  I've looked at the settings in the torrent software, but they seem to be set properly (what I can understand).

I'll hit the forums and report back. If anybody else has a notion, I'm all ears.

By the way, I ended up ordering the Arturia Beatstep, and it came in yesterday.  Worked flawlessly as a control surface, triggering vst sounds.  Worked great with percussion.  The pads are really useable as opposed to some of the AKAI stuff I briefly had. Was able to get the sequencer going pretty quickly but had to take a break before figuring out tempo sync and switching keys (everything defaults to C Major).  I was able to alter the notes of individual steps, control tempo via the unit, and turn steps on and off. Much sturdier than I thought as well. As I tinker, I'll record something and post it.  Who knows when, though. I'm off to camp right now, but I'm at work to print out the manual. Drunken manual reading while camping is something I do best.

Peace.

I missed this. I had problems with my internet too. When i got my new laptop and modem, my laptop was
always disconnecting from the wifi constantly. Also sometimes when i streamed, the whole thing
would crash. I demanded a new modem and still the same. I had countless phonecalls with my provider
and techs looking inside and out.

A guy on the other end said my upload streaming maybe to high and he lowered it from 10 Mbps to 7 Mbps.
The problem with that was the computer on their side would see this and switch it back. I then got a whole new line put in which fixed the laptop problem but my internet still crashes time to time when watching netflix on 2 tvs or downloading "legal" material.  :D

After months of turmoil and wanting to bazooka their headquarters, it`s not driving me crazy anymore,
but in the end, what can you do? See next reply video for the answer.
