This version sounds much clearer and more controlled (more sanitised) but I quite like the first version, there's a rawness there that suits your vocal and the song . . . (I'm wanna play the GB guitars like that!)

Great job, Nick. My ancestors left Ireland during the great famine, circa 1850, so the lyrics were especially interesting to me.

Quote from: Nick_ODH on March 19, 2014, 07:34:00 AMIs it just me or is the Soundcloud player no-worky today for everyone?  It worked okay yesterday... :(

The SoundCloud player will either use HTML5 or Flash, depending on a number of factors (OS, web browser, file type). This is controlled by SoundCloud, not Songcrafters. In this case, the player is using Flash because the file type (M4A) is not supported by SoundCloud in HTML5. If you convert the file to MP3, you'll get the HTML5 player instead. Apple iOS devices don't support Flash so M4A files won't play in the SoundCloud player on iPads, iPhones, or iPods.

The problem that Hilary mentioned turned out to be on my own computer only. It wasn't playing any HTML5 audio. But I've now fixed it and everything's working normally.

By the way, which version of your song do you want in the PaddyFest jukebox? It's currently the first version (SoundCloud) but I can change it to the second one if that's what you want.

Nice pick and great job Nick.  I too am a descendant of those that left around the time of the famine.  Such sad lyrics and a wonderful tune.  Well Done!

It's only now I got to listen to both versions side by side and I think you may be right.  The first version sounds more intimate and direct.  The other thing with the second one is that the recorded vocal was quieter so I had to turn everything else down in line with it.

The irony. It sometimes feels like Apple try to stifle you in whatever way they can.  Without access to my (Windows) desktop at home (rare these days), the only way to get GarageBand files to the outside world is to export to Soundcloud (which I hate anyway) in an m4a format.  Then ios devices don't support the funcitonality needed to play them.  Love it.

If I could get to my PC I'd get the m4a out of my phone, convert to mp3 and then never go near Soundcloud with a barge pole. Which is what I did the the second version yesterday.

Leave it at the first version, I think.

It is a really moving story and I was keen to retell it here when I saw the Paddyfest come up.  I'm not Irish - Welsh, actually - so my links to Ireland are tenuous.  The man I grew up knowing as my grandfather was Irish, worked on the railways in South Wales in the sixties. Except he was my step-grandfather (turns out), not my Dad's actual father. Long story.

Have you tried this app?  https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/file-converter-free/id525534736?mt=8

It converts a wide variety of file formats, including M4A and MP3.

The website lists the following export formats for audio:

Audio: convert to AAC, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA

http://www.fileconverteronline.com/ios/#tab-features

In case anyone else is interested, it's also available for Android and Blackberry.

It can resize pictures too. So if you have a picture on your phone that you want to upload to Songcrafters but it's too big (greater than 790 pixels in width), then you can use this app to reduce the image size before posting.

Sounds good 64, thanks - it is a right pain. I've got a lead that I plug in directly from the iPad to the BR and record that way (same with Thumbjam) - low tech, what a surprise!
