Interesting. I only knew Del Shannon's version (I thought the song was his), and it is VERY different from yours!
You did a good job (as always) with the harmonies and the piano, but I am heavily biased with Del Shannon's!

I've never heard this version but yes it's good. Here's the version I know - I have a confession, I like early Cliff Richard songs  ::)

It was deliberately very different.

There's also a reference to The Liver Birds theme tune in there (the speaky bit) from the early 70s . . .

Cool! Until now I only knew 80's Cliff Richard. I have to check his early stuff.
I just discovered 70's Elton John, and I am still amazed! For years I thought Elton John = Nikita  :P

It's interesting how the same song can be a hit for different artists in different countries. The version that I'm most familiar with is the original by Bobby Freeman which was a #1 hit in Toronto in 1958 and reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. It's also on the soundtrack for the very popular film "American Graffiti".

Del Shannon's 1964 cover only got to #23 in Toronto. And, surprisingly, it didn't even make the Top 40 on the Billboard charts in his home country. Cliff Richard's cover didn't chart here either.

The Beach Boys covered it in 1965, reaching #14 in Toronto and #12 on Billboard.

Finally, Bette Midler's cover was her first Billboard Top 40 hit, peaking at #17 in January 1973, and the first song she ever recorded, according to the intro of this 1997 performance:
