This song has been around since at least the 1760s when it was known as "The Merry Cuckold and the Kind Wife". It's also known as "Our Goodman". The Irish folk band, The Dubliners, recorded it as "Seven Drunken Nights" in the 1960s. It reached #7 in the UK charts in 1967 and #1 in Ireland. They also performed it on Top of the Pops.

About the recording: The guitar tracks were performed on my Godin xtSA using its piezo bridge transducers and recorded on my BR-864. There are two guitar tracks. One is the strummed chords which are most prominent. For the other, I used a capo at the 12th fret and arpeggiated the chords for a sort of mandolin sound. It's much lower in the mix. Everything else was done on the computer using SoundFonts and my AKAI MPK25 MIDI controller keyboard. The MIDI tracks include violin, pan flute, acoustic bass, and drums. They were recorded with Qtractor (a Linux DAW) and I imported the guitar and vocal tracks into it for final mixing. The vocals were recorded on oldrottenhead's Micro BR.

As I went home on Monday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a horse outside the door where my old horse should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that horse outside the door where my old horse should be?

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a lovely sow that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a saddle on a sow sure I never saw before

As I went home on Tuesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a coat behind the door where my old coat should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that coat behind the door where my old coat should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a woolen blanket that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But buttons in a blanket sure I never saw before

As I went home on Wednesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a pipe upon the chair where my old pipe should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that pipe upon the chair where my old pipe should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But tobacco in a tin whistle sure I never saw before

As I went home on Thursday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
They're two lovely Geranium pots me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But laces in Geranium pots I never saw before

As I went home on Friday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a head upon the bed where my old rotten head should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that head upon the bed where my old rotten head should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a baby boy that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a baby boy with his whiskers on sure I never saw before

As I went home on Saturday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two hands upon her breasts where my old hands should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them hands upon your breasts where my old hands should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a lovely night gown that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But fingers in a night gown sure I never saw before

As I went home on Sunday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a thing in her thing where my old thing should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that thing inside your thing where my old thing should be

Ah, you're drunk, you're drunk, you silly old fool. So drunk you cannot see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me

Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But hair on a tin whistle sure I never saw before

What a terrific song! Would also qualify for a BawdyFest, if that's what we were having... :)

Great vocals and delivery, James and a very traditional arrangement, 64G. The guitar sounds acoustic to me, and the violin, pan flute (sounds like a penny whistle! ;) ), bass and drums sound terrific. Excellent collab, fellers!

What a great collab!

The music is fab, excellent performance and great choice of sounds. I'm impress of how acoustic that Godin sounds on this one. Did you do anything different this time or is it just the mix?

Great vocals too, but that was hardly a surprise with our knowledge of the olddrunkenhead  ;) ;D
