LAME (I am)

OK, for years I've always used SwitchSound file converter, but now you have to pay for it and I'm too cheap. So I think I've successfully downloaded LAME for Audacity but I can't seem to get it to work. All the stuff I've read and looked at make out a snail embryo could do it. Not I, however. Any of the good folks out there able to help an old hen in distress? Also, if I get this LAME thing working, can I choose the bit-rate for the mp3? In SwitchSound I used to be able to convert a WAV to what ever bit-rate I wanted, but would usually always choose 320 just because it was the highest quality...

Here's the Audacity LAME installation instructions from the manual:

Also, if I get this LAME thing working, can I choose the bit-rate for the mp3?

Definitely. When you export a file from Audacity and choose MP3 as the type, you get a dialog box from which you can choose from quite a few different bit rates.
