+1

The bigger screen helps too...

pc is not an option, friend is a travelling musician, and getting a pc on and off an airplane as hand luggage may prove difficult.

Hook

Get a br80 & anything that will run audacity.
If he doesn't need to burn discs it's probably cheaper to go without optical drive in the laptop. I think the br80 comes with some daw?
Good luck...on

If you are going for a desktop, check out the noise of the fan. Usually, laptops are less noisy.

Alternatively, a bit geeky I know, but I managed to run a Linux operating system from a pen disk, and run energy XT, a very light DAW that runs both on Linux and Windows.

I could boot from my pendisk in any computer, and I could run the DAW. I couldn't configure the i/o card though, but I am not a Linux expert.

used macbook pro laptops are VERY inexpensive on eBay. it's pretty easy to find a 2.5 GHz machine for around $200-$300.

please trust me when i say this, a 2008 macbook pro is going to do everything you need and more. if you take care of them they last a VERY long time. i still use macbook pro laptops from 2006 for recording and mixing and they work perfectly. there's no lack of processing power either. they get the job done.

i'd take ANY macbook pro over the newest, lastest, & greatest Windows machine available. macbook pros just hold their usefulness for a LONG time. i doubt that most windows machines from 9 years ago could run the latest software the way a mac can, and for $200-$300, it's a great investment.

Absolutely. And if you'd like to upgrade memory or the HD, you can get regular and hybrid HDs at  Other World Computing. I can recommend the hybrid drives!!
Unlike wives, you can never have too many Les Pauls.
