I've long been a user of Google Chrome, and I know my around it's functions, but lately I'm being literally arse fucked by adverts. They are here now on SC, which I know shouldn't be the case. Right now, at the bottom of this page, all manner of shit. I get it on BBC sites (football etc). Every page I visit has 'funny coloured' link words that will take me off to other places I don't wanna go, should I be stupid enough to click on 'em. Every few seconds the top left of my browser page does that funny 'twirly' logo as the page reloads, offering me money off Thai brides or Virgin Holidays or free baked beans or browser updates or that my Java is fucked or that I'm gay and should reconsider my options or that I'm not gay and should still reconsider if I'm gay or not. Or something. I've checked that I'm running all the relevant software such as pop up blockers and firewalls and anti virus and all that shit. I am. So what the fuck is going on? Can anyone help or has anyone else experienced the same sorta stuff....right now Songcrafters is telling me I've won an iPhone and that I can earn $7487 a month and that I can create my dream holiday. WHAT!!!????

I don't see the problem in Chrome myself, but this looks like it addresses it:

You've been violated by malware. Remove from toolbars and extensions and any crap from control panel and then download adwcleaner to remove the rest. It's free.

It certainly sounds like a Chrome extension that was installed without your knowledge and approval. I don't know what settings are available in Chrome but Firefox has an option to prevent such installations. In Preferences, click the Security tab and make sure there's a checkmark in the box that says "Warn me when sites try to install add-ons". Firefox users should also click the Exceptions button next to this and make sure the list is empty (or, at least, that you're sure you want to allow certain exceptions; though I don't know why anyone would). With any luck, Chrome might have a similar option but I don't know what they call it or where it can be found.

Personally, I won't use Google Chrome because I can't trust a company that makes huge amounts of money by collecting information about web users and selling it to advertisers. I'm sure their browser is quietly collecting all kinds of information about you and sending it to Google to be stored in their database. Check out this Wikipedia page on Chrome under the heading "User tracking".

I highly recommend Malwarebytes. Use the free download. It is pretty darn good at finding and removing malware. It isn't a program to take the place of your antivirus, but an additional program. I keep it on the computer and run it on occasion just to make sure there are no problems.

OH, and my mother had a similar issue with pop up ads on every page and whatnot. It was something that was downloaded after she clicked on something innocent looking. I used malwarebytes to remove and then installed bitdefender for her... it's free and is a decent antivirus solution.

Thanks everyone.

Followed the vid cuthbert posted and so far, so fine.

I agree completely, 64. I don't really know why I use Google. Lazy, I suppose, I've used it for so long now...
