Where I've been............

Yea, BB, don't get too bummed by the notion of being sober. I was totally booze free for just over a year. After the initial shock, maybe a month or two, I then went into one of the most creative phases of my life, recording and writing around 45 original songs and 20 or so covers. I also slept like a baby every night and woke up feeling refreshed and awake. Hang on in there...just don't be tempted by the honey-roast peanuts and pork rinds. That stuff'll gi' yer an 'eart attack...

I'm very sorry to hear this too. My point is about the missing of alcohol/ drugs for creating music.

I have over the years been very heavily into drugs and booze, most of this time I played in bands and wrote songs, I got thrown out of bands, thrown out of gigs, but, I had some great times doing it. Since I packed up band life, I now write all my stuff sober and without drugs too, and, I have never written better, I can remember, it's all clearer, I know what I am doing, I'm not in a haze. I find I am more creative in a way I wasn't during the drug fueled years, a better way.

I do sit down with a pipe and a drink to listen back to my songs though, I may mix them when in this altered state, then listen back when I'm straight. If they sound ok both stoned and straight then I know I'm on the right track so to speak. Basically, when stoned, drunk or both, I can't write, or should I say.... I can but it's not good. It's taken me 40 years to work it out, but, it was fun, however I wish I had found it out sooner.

BB. You will be fine.

Hope 2014 is better for you, these things unfortunately take a while to get better, but you will reap the benefits with a bit of rest.
Keep putting down ideas by humming into your recorder and singing along then once you've built up some stuff you can always go back to it.
Any basic ideas you can send it along to any of us and we will help you out.

Hi BB,

I read your post while lurking and was really sad with what's happening to you.
Just keep positive - being sober is not so bad! And you will see in no time you will get better.

All the best for you my friend!

Good idea.

Sorry to hear of your medical troubles Dave. I was thinking the same thing. The music's in you man. This is chance to explore other ways to express yourself...keys or any other instrument could be the ticket. Hope you feel better soon. Do you swim? Could be very therapeutic.

Hi Dave, just hang on in there my friend, I'm sure you will fight  your way through this and come back stronger than ever. Roscoe

Hi Dave
hang in there -believe it or not you are in good company
life can be a bitch-
but there is an old Irish saying
"God never shuts one door, but he opens another"
there are so many directions music wise you can take
maybe it's the start of a whole new musical journey !!!!-

from someone who sits for a while at a PC and then spends an hour or two walking around like Groucho Marx
look on the bright side my friend--
