I agree with this, but I need to bounce to get a feel for how the song is building and the parts that the various instruments are contributing.

I also like to use effects while recording.  They make a difference to how I play.

There is an interesting scene in the movie: It Might Get Loud, where the Edge plays his guitar with, and without, effects to demonstrate how much they add.

Ian, this is right if we talk about an electric guitar, which sound is per se depending by the effects you will use with it, but since I'm more into acoustic music, I prefer to record dry. If you look at the musical spectrum of an acoustic guitar recorded wet, it's extremely likely that you will find lots of noise to eliminate. Using VST effects PROPERLY on a dry track exposes less the track itself to unwanted noise.

About bouncing, I think that, after all, it's just a matter of personal preferences: I get the same feel you talk about using a dedicated software for mixing such as Audition. And I prefer Audition (or any else DAW) not because it "sounds better" this way (of course), but again only for GUI reasons.

Alfredo,

I agree with you - the workflow that anyone uses to record may vary and will depend upon a lot of things.  I'm still working out my workflow and I do expect that it will be vary in itself depending upon the song I'm recording and the instruments being used.

cheers,

Ian
