Presume you can have either one free of charge.

Given the two options of Logic Pro 9 or Reaper, which would you choose and why?

I'd go for Logic 9 because that's what i use and i found it quite easy to work with ....

Reaper.

It comes with some very nice plug ins, it works with my Behringer BCF2000 control surface, it's rock solid on windows 32bit and 64bit. Easy to use, has fabulous on line resources and of all the budget DAWs I have used, it does not feel like a budget DAW.

Using ASIO and a decent audio interface, the latency is very low, so much so that it isn't an issue. It works fine with a mixture of track types simultaneously, I have used MIDI, wav, mp3 and video tracks in a single project. It's simple to transfer projects between machines, it burns CDs directly from a project....

The list is impressive.

I'd buy it again.

As far as I can tell, there's no free trial version of Logic Pro 9. You'd have to buy the full program for $200 US.

The current version is Logic Pro X (not 9)

So REAPER seems to be your best bet if you're looking for something you can try for free. And it's also reasonably priced ($60) should you later decide to purchase it.

Another free one that might be worth considering is PreSonus Studio One. But if you decide to upgrade later, it will cost you a lot more than REAPER.

My intent was to keep a level playing field, to keep costs out of the equation and focus on functionality of the two programs. I suppose one could say the secondary concern is the learning curve vs. power. I believe that the popularity of some DAWs has more to do with who is using it  and marketing vs. easy of use and functionality. Tony Iommi uses ProTools in his home studio. Do you believe he paid $600USD for it, or was he given the program for the endorsement?

I doubt I'm the only one with an interest or curiosity into these two popular DAWs. ;D It doesn't hurt that I value the opinion of the members here. 8)
