Apologies if this has surfaced here already.  Stumbled on a great movie on Napster and the dawn of the download culture.

I know it's poor form to bump your own thread, but I feel this video would be of interest to some of you.

I clicked on it originally on a recommendation, knowing I wouldn't watch the whole thing.  Then it sucked me right in.  Although the film centers around Napster, it really is about how some college-aged kids changed history by using a new peer-to-peer sharing platform one of them developed.  There is mention of Limewire and Gnutella.  The guy who developed Gnutella is worth it alone.  He talks to Congress like they're children.

Okay.  No more bumping.

Looks like it only works if you're in the USA.

I'll look around and see if I can find it somewhere else.

Total time is 106:21. I will try to find some time to watch it when I can.

I noticed that it's directed by Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston Esq. of "Bill & Ted" fame).  :)

Just watched it. Yeah, I liked the Gnutella guy too. I also liked Roger McGuinn's comment to the senate about his record deals as a member of The Byrds. Apparently, they never got any of the royalties that they were entitled to from The Byrds' records. All they got was an advance that worked out to about $1000 each (peanuts). The greedy bastards at the record company screwed them, just like they've screwed so many other musicians. But he goes on to say that when his music was sold through mp3.com, he received 50% of the profits. So he was happier with that business model than he was with the old model controlled by the music industry mafia.

I get the drift though.
