This may have been covered before .. but here goes.

Listening to Speedy &co covering "Life in the Fast Lane" got me thinking about how a great riff can be the foundation of a great song.

I think my top Three nominations would be

1...........Satisfaction 8)
2..........Day Tripper 8)
3..........Walk this Way 8) 8)

I guess you'll have loads more but I'm imposing a limit of three per person :o so there ::)

Faves off the top of my head... not "best riffs" by any means...

- Brad Whitford's main riff in Aerosmith's Last Child
- Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack Lightnin' riff... that's one of THE guitar riffs of all time
- Derek St Holmes's riffs on almost anything on Ted Nugent's first solo album, OK, I'll choose one - Just What The Doctor Ordered, that's a MONSTER riff (and he sings the vocal at the same time!!)... but, same album, the Motor City Madhouse riff comes a very close second to that... Storm Troopin' is pretty good too...

2. Offspring - Come Out and Play
3. Jam - Saturdays Kids

Hey! I just discovered (via wikipedia) that St Holmes and Whitford did an album together in 80/81 when Whitford left Aerosmith and St Holmes had quit the Ted Nugent band... I'll see if can find any traces of it - two monster riff men together!

Ah riff territory...

Ok off the top of my head, again not best technically or anything, but just the best at getting into my head and staying there...

1. Rainbow (there are lots of great Rainbow riffs but to pick one...) - No Release.

from the Difficult to Cure Album, which got quite mixed reviews, which in one way I understand as they did try and court commercial success with this album. Having said that, I think they really found their gear and I actually think they were more than suited to the music they played on this album. Melodically fantastic but with great sprinklings of guitar magic from Ritchie Blackmore.

2. Deep Purple (this was unintentional - just sprang to mind - another Ritchie Blackmore nugget) - Knocking on your Back Door.

Exquiste little riff I think.

3. ZZ Top - Gimmie All Your Lovin'

I guess a lot of older rocker are probably bored with this one, even me sometimes, but if you can remember how you felt the first few times you heard it I think you will agree it blew your socks off! Well it did me!!
