if your audio cds play in some cd players but not in  others. then in most cases the cause is either the media you are burning to or the speed you are burning your cds at. i speak from experience. as for what format you use to make your cds. wav, ogg or whatever, that is irrelevant if the cds wont play in your stereo.

I recall when I first started using cdr's that some old cd players wouldn't recognize them. I had an old boombox that even listed in the manual that it would not play cdr's.
Good luck!

Ok, the info I'm getting on various forums and searches is consistent with these comments.
The program I'm using is Boss Roland's Sonar and it has a recommended CD burner included that goes direct from wav to CD format that I'm going to try.
Failing that, it will be about buying new players.
It seems CD's are just about extinct (My sons only have CD players in the car and even then, they use their Ipods to the stereo) so I'll have to rethink what to buy.
One of the basics of recording is to try the song on different systems so what do you guys do for that?

I still burn to disc for listening in the truck and on a boom box (or whatever the kids call a portable stereo.)  I'll also listen on my iPod and through the homes stereo via the iPod and a 1/8" to rca cable.  Oh, I'll listen to the WAV file AND the mp3 on the iPod. That makes a difference, too. I don't have a way to cut acetate or vinyl so I don't listen that way  ;D

Along with the new stereo!

I've never had decent monitors but used to have a stereo I used, now without a proper studio I have no monitors. I use my AKG headphones when I can and everything sounds great through them but I do believe they lie. I always trust my earbuds and try to find the point where they sound good on cans & good on the buds.

I love my earphones (Sennheiser 280 pros) and i use them lots for preliminary editing but the separation is so different from good monitors (KRK 6's) that I see why so many recommend not to mix on headphones for balance and levels.
OTOH the monitors pick up the room and, depending on volume, it changes so you do need to have both.
I love the car (Volvo with a nice stereo) as it has a great sound due to the interior shape. I record in there sometimes if I want NO reverb from the room.
