Five Songs on your iPod

I thought it would be a nice insight into people's music to take a random selection of 5 tracks from their iPod or suchlike.  Not "these are my favourite 5 songs of all time" or "these are 5 cool songs from my iPod".

If a song is there, it's because you put it there.  Or maybe your 8 year old daughter put it there.  Whatever, it's all a fascinating insight, I think.

"Rules"

1. It should be a shuffle / random selection using the whole of the iPod library, not from playlists...
2. List the next 5 consecutive tracks that come up, warts and all.  List the song name, artist and album.
3. It should be the next 5, not skipping through till you get 5 good ones together or any under-handed shenanigans like that.
4. Optionally, give a bit of background against the songs that come up.
5. Do the shuffling as your writing the post if you can, don't pre-select.

I had a couple of trial runs in the car on the way in, now I'm going to do my real 5.

1

Song:   Glass Onion
Artist:  The Beatles
Album:   The White Album

White Album is probably my favourite Beatles. Doesn't come up that often shuffling.  Great atmosphere in this song.

2

Song:  Lloyd Ganja '9t9'2 Lament
Artist: Goldie Lookin' Chain
Album:  Under the Counter

GLC whimsy bit of nonsense.  GLC are the local band in my neck of the woods.  In fact my next door neighbour but one's sister is getting married to their front man, Adam.

3

Song:   Second Skin
Artist:   The Chameleons
Album:   The Peel Sessions

Chameleons were massive for me in the early 80's and these Peel Sessions are more raw and immediate than the studio stuff for me.  You could put these up against Editors or similar bands from 25-30 years on, they wouldn't suffer in the comparison.

4

Song:  Senses Working Overtime
Artist:  XTC
Album:  Waxworks: Some Singles 1977-1982

This looks like I've frigged it.  I didn't, honestly. Senses working Overtime is one of my favourite tracks. Of all. Massive.

5

Song:  Heart Kicked In
Artist:   Trawler
Album:  Kicking Keyboard

It's me.  Trawler was my Band name in the 90's.  This was recorded back then.  I do have more than 200 tracks amongst the 7,700+ total tracks, and it probably is fair to say I play them disproportionately.  So they do come up in my shuffle quite often.  I don't believe the iPod shuffle is that random, it's quite annoying at times.

I think that works alright.  I'd really like to hear your five.

Nice idea. This is bound to throw up something embarrassing for me! Let me have a look (on my trusty and wonderful Sansa Fuze rather than an iPod).

Oh... lol. Could have been a lot worse!

1. Status Quo - Roll Over Lay Down
2. Nick Drake - The Thoughts of Mary Jane
3. Focus - 10,000 Years Behind My Mind (check it out - it's fucking awesome!!!!)
4. Betty Davis - Talkin' Trash (70's pimp funk!)
5. Visage - Blocks on Blocks

So good. I slightly prefer Sgt Rock, but both of them are up there in the VIP area for me.

Interesting thread. So far I only know two of the songs posted (and not many more of the artistes!!).

There's not a lot of point in me doing this, though...

First, what's an ipod? :D

Second, my mobile listening device is an old Creative Labs usb-stick player (Muvo).

It's loaded with Rush's entire studio catalogue, has been for at least 2 years. I updated it a while back when the new album came out (and I bought the one or two albums I was missing). So all five songs (even if I could remember how to make the thing play random) would be, er, Rush songs...

It's all I listen to on my daily commute (and the daily commute is the only time I use it).

I find it very relaxing and comforting listening from one end to the other over the course of a week or two. I tried doing it with some other favourite artistes (Rory Gallagher, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Ocean Colour Scene, Slade) and I got bored very quickly with all of them. I also get bored with loading a mixture of favourite artistes (and I HATE randomn plays :D). But I never get bored with the Rush catalogue... that quite surprised me originally, but I just accept it as a little home-from-home when I put the earphones in (except, of course, I never listen to Rush at home anymore!)

Don't have an iPod, my good ol' unbranded mp3 player will suffice ;)

1. Poison Door (The Sisters of Mercy) - Dark synth/gothic rock.
2. Rory Rides me Raw (The Vaselines) - this is the band Kurt Cobain loved and covered many times, and a personal favourite.
3. Drown (The Smashing Pumpkins) - a fine tune from their great pre-Siamese Dream era.
4. Blackout (David Bowie) - a great tune from "Heroes".
5. Sharpen up those fangs (The Presidents of the USA) - to put a smile on my face

Not so long ago I bought their greatest hits CD (cheap, in Tesco), mainly for their three better known songs (Fade to Grey, Night Train and Visage).  That one's not on there, though.  I work not far from where he comes from - Newbridge.  Top of the Kendon Hill.  Underated band, I think.

PUSA are a great band.  I keep meaning to cover one of their songs.
