Not so long ago I bought their greatest hits CD (cheap, in Tesco), mainly for their three better known songs (Fade to Grey, Night Train and Visage).  That one's not on there, though.  I work not far from where he comes from - Newbridge.  Top of the Kendon Hill.  Underated band, I think.

Blocks on Blocks is on the first (and by far the best) self-titled Visage album. It's very Kraftwerk influenced on the chorus, and it's funny after all this time that I still love that album as much as I did when it came out. It's weathered time very well (for me at least). There's a lot of great creativity and musical ideas on there.

I love Focus and hadn't heard of this song before so I wanted to check it out. But it turns out that it's not by the Dutch band Focus (Thijs van Leer, Jan Akkerman, etc.); it's by a UK band called Focus Three (Larry Steele, Liza Strike, and Tony Wilson) which formed in 1967. There are some videos of the song on YouTube but they're all blocked due to a copyright complaint by EMI. I can't find it anywhere else.

I love focus - the craziest band ever, Hocus Pocus is one of my all time fave, and the rest of the family's biggest hate :-) I did the same 64 :-)

1. The Holy Modal Rounders - Going Nowhere Fast - I'll Never Love Nobody But You
Recorded from vinyl onto disc with one of those fancy record players with built in cd player. From my father's collection. A favorite from my formative years. The Holy Modal Rounders are an acquired taste for a lot of people, but I love 'em.

2. The Who - Quadrophenia - It Is In My Head
I downloaded a butt load of Who music a couple of years ago when I was going through a "check out popular songwriters music" phase. I have to admit I've never listened to this entire album, much less in one sitting. That being said, I don't know this song well, but I've heard it before. I think it's a recognizable "The Who" song which is fun to listen to and figure out what makes "the who" song. I think the drumming is really recognizable, for instance.

3. Buell Kazee - Anthology of American Folk Music (The Ballads) - The Wagoner's Lad
I grabbed this when I had the chance because I read that the Holy Modal Rounders listed it as a big influence. I've listened to all of these songs, but I don't remember most of them, tbh.  Listening through makes me think of a time long ago when I would listen to my father's record collection or his radio shows that featured this style of music.

4. Hannah Busse - FAWM 2011 - Steady As She Goes
This is a track from a gorgeous vocalist that participated in the February Album Writing Month challenge in 2011 (obviously.) I downloaded all of her tracks it looks like. I don't remember this song specifically but listening back I'm falling in love with her vocals all over again. I have a LOT of music from FAWM and the 50 Songs in 90 Days songwriting challenges over the last six years or so, but it'd be super cool if my next, and last, song was from a songcrafter.

5. India.Arie - Acoustic Soul - Intro
A gorgeous :50 song from India.Arie that, like the title says, introduces her Acoustic Soul album. Simple and to the point, but damn fine.

Next song because it started before I was typing was The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - All You Need Is Love
No comment needed.
