Audio interface question

Would this setup make sense:

Guitar > Basic audio interface (eg Peavey Xport USB) > DAW.  Then within DAW I can use a plugin to add effects to my guitar signal.

My questions:  1) Would I be able to hear the added effects of the plugin whilst I strum my guitar as I record? Would latency be a problem?

2)  Would it be better to buy an audio interface with built-in effects, such as a POD and just use the DAW for mixing and tweaking?

Thanks guys,

Hi

I'm using Roland Quad Capture UA - 55 as interface via Sonar X2 producer as DAW and so many plugins as well. Anyway it depend how strong is your PC/MAC. I'm on i7 quad core @ 3,64 GHz, 8 GB RAM, so I didn't noticed any delays or other faults.

As I'm using now that configuration, checking so many advices, blogs and videos, everywhere you can find - "record all your instruments clear and then put some plugins or effects on your tracks", it's because you have more possibilities to edit your recorded vaweforms/tracks. I'm using just Guitar Rig 5 pro for electric guitar recordings straight away, but just really sometimes..

Your audio input should be able to route to the audio out so that you can hear what you are playing without the latency of the DAW. You won't be able to put any DAW insert effects onto it in this configuration.

If you're after a particular sound, then record it with the effect. There's lots of ways to configure the set up with an external effects for example you can listen to the effect whilst recording the unmodified signal, and thern play the track back through the effect. This means that you can modify the effect after the track has been recorded because you captured the raw audio from your instrument.

External Inserts do take some setting up and you may experience latency with this method but you can alter the sound drivers - particularly if you are using ASIO  - to remove the latency.

My advice is play about with the setup you have and see if you can do what you want to do with it before you start spending any more money.

Cheers for Flash,  thinking of going getting a basic audio interface and taking it from there...maybe a POD in the not too far future :)

I've got other experiences especially,  when I'm recording via Guitar Rig Pro 5. It's seriously amazing plugin, so many sounds, choices and user's settings, but if I've got more guitar tracks, there are some delays, which sometimes confusing me and I'm using ASIO. Doesn't matter how strong and fast is my PC, it looks like GR Pro 5 bug.

I have the red kidney shaped guitar pod, it was not too expensive off EBay and works well. Flexible outputs and very tweakable.

ha! With at least 3 br800 and quite a few micros and micro80s we'll see :)

Or maybe we should connect all of them as audio interfaces to your computer!!
