hey,

i just got a BR and im loving it so far. i play electric guitar and wanted something jsut to record song ideas...have a bit of fun and practise my soloing skills etc over chord tracks and messing around.

i just have a few questions that im getting a bit frustrating on or jsut cant fidn an answer to anywhere else.

1. i have a 1gb SD card on the way...if i copy the ROLAND folder over to the new memory card after ive initialized it will my preset guitar ptach's ive edited be transfered to?

2. i have recorded a song with 2 guitar tracks just a rhythm an lead section...how do i get those tracks into an mp3 at high quality to then be transfered to my computer?

3. can i use an mp3 stored in the MP3 folder as a track in a song?

eg. can i import a backing track i have as an mp3 into the current song as track 4 for instance?

thanks

Pedro

Hello there devilfish.

Quote1. i have a 1gb SD card on the way...if i copy the ROLAND folder over to the new memory card after ive initialized it will my preset guitar ptach's ive edited be transfered to?

The Presets and User Effects Patches are saved in Micro BR internal memory so they are always there even if you change the SD card.

Quote2. i have recorded a song with 2 guitar tracks just a rhythm an lead section...how do i get those tracks into an mp3 at high quality to then be transfered to my computer?

Now you have to Master the Song. Follow this procedure to export to MP3:

1. Make sure you are on the first screen. Press Exit and Utility two times simultaneously. You are now on Mastering mode.

2. Press Effects and, using + or -, choose a mastering preset. You can hear the difference real-time by playing the song.

3. Rewind to the beginning. Press Record and then Play. Your song is now being mastered in real time, when it is over, press Stop.

4. A new screen will appear, asking you if you want MP3 or WAV export, choose YES by pressing TR4.

5. If you want to name your song later on PC (which I recommend), just press TR4 again. If you don't, press TR3. On the naming screen, you can use + or - to change the characters and right CURSOR to choose the next character. When you're done, press Exit.

6. Press EXE (TR4). It will ask you to confirm. Press TR4 again. It is now exporting.

7.  Your song has now been saved in MP3 on the /MP3 folder.

Quote3. can i use an mp3 stored in the MP3 folder as a track in a song?

Yes you can. First download the song to the /MP3 folder of your Micro BR and then follow this procedure:

1. In the first screen, the song screen, press UTILITY

2. Press TR2 (TRK)

3. Press the right cursor (>) one time

4. Press TR1 (IMP)

5. Choose your MP3 file by pressing + or - and then press TR5 (NEXT)

6. Choose the track you want the MP3 file to be saved to and then press TR2 (TIM)

7. Press Next

Your MP3 file is now being imported to the beginning of your song.

That's true. However, there's a third effects bank for Song Patches. These are stored on the SD memory card in each song folder. And, yes, they will be copied when you copy the ROLAND folder.

hey,

ok thanks. i noticed i have U1-80, S1-80, and P1-80. i have saved my custom ones over U1-80 but they were automatically stored on the micro br even when i replaced the SD card

what do you mean by a third sound bank? which one is stored to the SD Card?

thanks for the help above, i just have a few more questions:

1. if im jamming in standard mode (nothing) and jsut rtecord guitar as track one and a 2nd guitar track...then i want to add drums to them....how do i go about it? how do i add drum rhythms etc to the guitar tracks ive recorded?

2. what is the bounce function for? i understand themp3 mode as an mp3 player and the normal mode for recording and jamming. and i have yet to master anything but i understadn thats a finalizing process for exporting as an mp3...

could you guys help me out here?

thanks

Sorry. "Bank" was the wrong term. I meant to say there are three patch storage areas - Preset, User, and Song - each containing five banks of patches - Guitar, Mic, Line, External Mic, and Mastering Tool Kit.

Patches in the Preset patch area are stored in the Micro BR's internal read-only memory and can't be permanently changed. You can make temporary changes to the settings but you can't save those changes in the Preset area. Both the User patch area and the Song patch area contain copies of the Preset patches at first, but you can change them and save the changes in either the User or Song patch area.

Patches in the User area are stored in the Micro BR's internal re-writable (flash) memory, so they won't be lost when you turn off the Micro BR's power or change memory cards. However, they will be lost if you Initialize the Micro BR's Settings as described on page 110 of the Micro BR manual.

Patches in the Song patch area are stored on the memory card in the song's folder. So, if you change memory cards, those patches will no longer be available unless you copied the ROLAND folder from one card to the other. Also, the Song patches are unique to each song. So, you can't access a Song patch from one song in another song. And there's no direct way to copy a Song patch from one song to another. So, you'll probably want to save most of your custom patches in the User patch area so that you can access them from any song. Occasionally, you might want to tweak a patch for a particular song. In that case, it might make sense to store it in the Song patch area.

As mentioned earlier, the User patch area will be over-written with copies of the Preset patches whenever you Initialize the Micro BR's settings (page 110). So you should backup your User patches before Initializing the Micro BR's settings. Unfortunately, there's no direct way to do this. But you can do it indirectly by first copying each of the User patches to the Song patch are of one song, then backup the memory card. After you Initialize the Micro BR's settings, you can restore the backup to the memory card and copy the patches from the Song patch area back into the User patch area. This is a tiresome and laborious task as patches must be copied one at a time but, unfortunately, there's no easier way to backup the User patch area. Of course, you can simply avoid Initializing the Micro BR's settings so that you don't have to worry about backing up your User patches. However, when a firmware update becomes available for the Micro BR, the last step of the update procedure will probably be to Initialize the Micro BR's settings. At least, that's always been the last step of updating the other BR models, such as my BR-864. So it's important to be aware that Initializing will reset all of your User patches and you need to back them up before updating the firmware.

The drum track is independent from the other 4 audio tracks. Meaning that it is not recorded like the other 4 tracks, you have to program the drum patterns to play in a specific order, like verse chorus verse, creating what is called a  drum sequence. Did you recorded your guitar on track 1 in sync with the Micro BR metronome on a given tempo? If you didn't, then first I suggest you do it because you will have a hard time synchronizing the drum sequence with your audio later on. After you do this, have the patience and follow this tutorial at http://microrecorders.org/articles/create_a_simple_drum_sequence.html. Hope it helps you out.

Quote2. what is the bounce function for? i understand themp3 mode as an mp3 player and the normal mode for recording and jamming. and i have yet to master anything but i understadn thats a finalizing process for exporting as an mp3...

Bouncing is simply put the process of mixing 2 or more tracks into one single stereo track. Imagine you have recorded all the 4 tracks, by bouncing you can free 2 tracks to record something else. And you can keep doing this infinitely.

Yes, an other alternative would be to write down on paper the effects settings. :P
