New (to me) BR-1600 - Tips and tricks?

Trim pot need to be adjusted to not peak (ie go red) - the 'input level' knob the recording level onto the track - you need to use the two together. That can be a little low on what you are recording on the 1600 - but normally sounds great. Note you can record at lower level, and recalibrate the track levels afterwards - I hardly ever bother. NB if you are desperate to get the vol up, the compressor as a level control where you can add a few DB - or if you are using a input preset, there are levels all the way along.

If you are using the guitar amp emulators - change the speaker default, the 2by4 or 4by4 are much better.

Oh - if you are new to the 1600, it seems quite confusing - but once you get used to it, is really easy - and you don't need the manual hardly ever. That's my experience btw. Persevere - its a wonderful machine.

And let it be said in case of Weary-of-DAW-Syndrome what is achievable with the magnificent BR.
Bosko Schwartz recorded his album on his BR1600, had the CD mastered professionally and released the result to the world.
