A lot of people seem to think that Johnny Cash did this song. It's possible that he might have covered it but I can find no evidence of that.

According to Wikipedia, the song was written by Roy Acuff and Jimmy Dean. But "The Billboard Book of Number One Hits" by Fred Bronson doesn't mention Acuff in its history of the song. It says "The 100th number one single of the rock era was written in an hour-and-a-half on a plane ride to Nashville by a man who introduced many future country stars to the nation on his weekly television series." It then goes on to talk about Jimmy Dean and how he was flying to Nashville with only three songs to record, but it was customary back then to record four songs in a session, so he needed another. It quotes Jimmy Dean: "At that time, you recorded four sides a session. I had to do something. I had worked with a guy in summer stock named John Mentoe. He was six-foot-five and skinny as a rail, but he was the only guy in the troupe taller than me, and I used to call him Big John. It had a powerful ring to it. So I put him in a mine and killed him on a plane going to Nashville. It took me an hour-and-a-half to write."

That's very interesting thanks for sharing 64.... I remember reading an article... where the ending was believed to be too controversial for that era... Originally the ending  was "At the bottom of this mine lies a helluva man"... I think there was a release of that version also. I've never heard that version.
