I'm all for conserving space here...Actually the link in my profile to my website "myspace" has most of my current recordings....I totally wouldn't mind maybe posting something that says "just check out my website link" or something, and deleting my older posts....Question- Can I delete posts that I started? I would be more than happy to help save room.  Another thing, I must confess, some of those songs aren't even what I consider a finished recording...you know...so, we should probably get rid of them...I'm sorry, and in the future-I'll definately wait untill I have something completley ready before I post :)  Thanks,

Kody, you can go in and edit any post you made with the modify choice at the post.  That way you don't have to delete anything but the mp3 song file and redirect the player.  Ever not-so-finished songs are a great learning tool for others so don't dump them if you don't have to.  :o

I like the idea of just relinking the mp3 player posts direct to off-site locations.  No limits then and anyone that already has a server, website or other site access can store their work anywhere they want.

BTW, what about the "soundclick" location that ORH is using for his "nevermet" songs?  I checked into it once and you can sign up as a player or listener but never went any further.  Looks like a good music local.  8)

i use the free version, i have jemima's kite, nevermet and my own bunkbeds stuff there, and one for a friend , i so far have not been limited as to what i can post currently there is between 80 and 100 songs i think. and about 5 videos. is a good way of putting your stuff out there and maybe finding an audience, tho i do get plenty of emails telling me not to give up my day job.

Soundclick is a great site. ORH introduced me to it, and it's a really well-designed shop window for your songs, videos and pictures. It also seems like more of a proper music 'community' - as opposed to a social networking site. It's my main music site now.

There are a few of us from here on there if you know where to look...

QuoteHey folks, let's all try to help Pedro conserve space by moving our attachments offsite.

Wait, there is no need to start doing that right now. Microrecorders.org is in a shared hosting account which has an unlimited hosting space and bandwidth, but recently I have read that it is not in fact unlimited but reasonably unlimited...something I can't quite understand. In real-life you cannot have, for example, 200GB online or something like that. All in all, don't worry about it for now, I will try to find a solution and will contact the hosting helpdesk for more details. The Skydrive idea is great though, with a little automation script when putting the MP3 player it could be a good solution. Thanks for the suggestion 64Guitars.  :)

Okay. I'm glad to hear that the space situation is not yet desperate. I'd hate to lose all the old messages and MP3s. If it ever does come to that, I hope you will give us plenty of advance notice so that we'll have time to move our old MP3s offsite before you delete them.

I think that plain messages without attachments don't consume much space, so I hope you never need to delete messages older than 30 days as you suggested above. I don't think that would gain much space unless the messages have attachments. So, I think it would be better to delete only the attachments that are older than 30 days (or whatever period), but leave the text of the message in place so that people can still read the old messages.

Meanwhile, if some of us try to link to offsite files when posting new messages here, instead of attaching more files, that will allow the older posts to remain intact longer.

Yes, you can delete any of your own posts. However, that's exactly what I'd hoped to avoid. I was afraid that Pedro might be forced to delete old messages and attachments, as he suggested, in order to save space. I'd hate to lose all the old messages and hoped to avoid it by moving large attachments offsite and linking to them in the messages. That way, the messages could remain and any MP3 files they referenced would still work in the player. The only difference would be the location of those MP3 files. They'd no longer be using space on Pedro's server.

As for directing people to your MySpace page (or SoundClick, etc.) instead of posting your songs in the forums, I don't think that's a good idea. The MP3 Player gadget in these forums is a great convenience. It's very easy to click the Play button and instantly hear someone's new song. If I instead had to go to their website and find the song to hear it, I probably wouldn't bother most of the time. But it's good to offer your website link in addition to any songs you post here. That way, if someone clicks the MP3 player gadget for your song and likes what they hear, they can then go to your website to hear more of your work.

I have to admit that the convenience of the MP3 player gadget has made be lazy. Now, when a new member posts their first song but doesn't add the MP3 player gadget, I usually won't listen. I figure they'll eventually figure out how to edit their post and add the player, or someone else will add it for them, so I'll wait until then.

It would be nice if you could link the MP3 player gadget in your message to a file stored at MySpace, SoundClick, etc., but I don't know if that's possible. Those type of sites seem to hide the URL of the actual file so that people must actually visit the site to hear the songs. That way, they can track the number of page hits.

If you've posted some unfinished songs here in the past, there's a better alternative to deleting them. Just edit your original message and replace the attachment with the completed version of the song (or a link to it, if offsite). Actually, though, there's something to be said for leaving the old versions in place and adding the completed version in a new message of the same thread. That way, people can see the progress that was made in the completion of the song. This can be very helpful to people who are trying to find ways to improve their own songs.

Anyway, I see that Pedro is now saying we don't need to do anything just yet. So, I guess we should leave existing messages as they are and maybe just give some consideration to future postings. If you can upload to SkyDrive or MediaFire and link the MP3 player gadget to the offsite file, great! But I don't want to discourage anyone from posting their songs here, and I don't want anyone to delete their old messages. Those old messages and songs can be very useful and enjoyable to new members who haven't yet seen or heard them, as well as to older members who occasionally like to review old messages or listen to songs by their favourite posters.

SoundClick seems like a pretty good music site. However, I don't think you can link the MP3 player gadget to songs stored at SoundClick because there doesn't seem to be any way to get the actual URL of the SoundClick MP3 file. Although, I don't have an artist account there so I might be missing something.

Oh well, I just started moving uploads from one of my posts last night that had a lot of takes on it:

http://microrecorders.org/community/collaborations/'-way'-tune-needs-singer/0/

I have a website anyway to move them to so thought I'd try it.  Only downside it seems is that you no longer get that self-affirming "downloaded xx times" display next to the file title.   ::)

I think I gave the wrong idea on this one. The situation is not critical and there is no need to delete any posts or MP3's. I stated that in the "near future" I would have to remove posts and MP3's but only if it was absolutely necessary. So for now you can keep uploading files to the server. This is something I have to clarify with the host.

Concluding, there isn't any problem with the space or bandwidth. If any problem comes up I will warn you all in advance for any measure I take.
