Back up and Recovery Problem

Started by woland, February 18, 2009, 12:22:57 PM

Hi There, new to the forum so 'ello'!!
I'm relatively new to the BR but have generally got the hang of recording on 4 tracks (still struggling a little with bounce!) My problem is when I ran out of space on the 128mb card that came with the unit I thought I would back up some of the songs to my computer so I could do the bounce/add tracks/mastering with a little more free memory space.
Trouble is, I followed the procedure in the manual and when I came to recover the songs there was nothing there!  The card shows the data is present on my computer but I can't select the songs on the BR I wanted to recover.  The manual says you should erase the Roland folder before restoring (which seemed strange) but did it anyway and I ended up losing 2 days work!!!  All the BR has in the SNG/SEL is 01:SONG0000. I've tried a test by just recording a few seconds of music and renaming/backup/recovering it but still have the same problem.  Just wanted to know if I've done something wrong or the unit is faulty.  I now have a 1gb card so should have less problems but will still need to back up from time to time.
Sorry for the rambling message, really appreciate your help with this!!

The backup/restore procedure described in the Micro BR manual is for the entire memory card rather than individual songs. This is the only method that Roland supports. There is a way to backup and restore individual songs, but it requires a good basic knowledge of computer file systems. It seems to me that most BR users don't have adequate computer knowledge to do this without getting themselves into trouble, so I'm reluctant to describe the method. I've described it in the past though, so if you believe you have sufficient computer knowledge, search the forums for my previous messages on this topic.

Most BR users are probably better off sticking with full card backups as the manual describes. This will be easier if you have several cards since you can remove the card you're currently using and insert an empty (initialized) card so that you can restore a backup without fear of losing anything. Obviously, you should do a full backup of any card before you initialize it, since initialization erases all of the songs from the card.

You might find that my BR Explorer program makes backup and restore a little easier. You can download it here:

It also allows you to see what's in any backups that you've already created and stored on your hard drive. You said you've already created a backup but, when you restored it, there were no songs. BR Explorer will show you which, if any, songs are in that backup. If it shows that there are some songs, then you probably just made a mistake in restoring it, and you'll be able to restore it now using BR Explorer. But, if it shows that the backup contains no songs, then you must have made a mistake when you made the backup.

Hi there, cheers for your reply.
Downloaded the manager and looked in my backup file and tried to play it - gave me a access violation error.
If I name a song on the BR and copy all the info for it to the back up (to a folder in my documents for example) and use the restore function in your BR explorer would that work?

To be honest, just gonna start again and hope it works this time.
