Micro BR-80 USB Storage Speed

Started by sodalimon, April 26, 2013, 01:42:23 PM

Hi,

I've just noticed that my Micro BR BR-80 has really slow transfer speed over USB Storage connection to PC. Meaning slow; like, 3MB/s slow when reading, even less than that when writing files... The card within the device is a class 10 (100x) Lexar SDHC 16GB... And it looks like my device has a problem...

Has anyone noticed the same behaviour? Or is it my device (well I'll check with the cable now) only...

I also have drive busy errors when trying to record on eBand tracks. It just cannot cope with playing and recording at the same time...

What a waste of resources...

I'm attaching a screenshot of crystaldiskmark after testing the card with a usb 2.0 card reader.

  • Have you initialized the card in the BR-80? Roland says "When you use an SD memory card available in the market, please initialize it by the BR-80 beforehand. If you fail to initialize the card by the BR-80, it won't work with the BR-80 properly."

  • Which firmware version do you have? Updates often fix incompatibilities with certain memory cards. The latest version is 1.06 and is available here:

  • Have you tried other memory cards? For example, how is the speed when using the card that came with the BR-80?

Hi 64Guitars,

I have the latest (1.06) firmware...

I now tried again with the card that came with the BR-80, the slow USB storage issue is existent as well. The fastests I see is always limited to 3MB/s (less then 3 when writing).

I've tried with many cards. But the USB speed is always terrible. I'll try with another cable on an other PC now.

About the drive busy problem... Just to make sure; I backed up my card and reformatted on the BR-80. I'll try a recording now and see if I was wrong about it.

Thanks a lot for the kind reply...

Best Regards,
Emre

Edit:
Yes, formatting on the BR-80 seems to have solved the issue with the drive busy problem for now. Thanks for the advice, I had thought of it as one of those company warning that wasn't that important. The slow file access over USB is still here though :(

Yeah, the USB cable would have been my next guess too. If that doesn't solve the problem, then maybe a call to Roland tech support might help. They may have seen this problem before.

Maybe your computer is detecting the BR as a USB 1.1 device? Have your tried another USB port? Do you experiment the same problem with other USB devices?

Well...

Which ever cable is used, on any PC, any OS, any port, with any SD card, it doesn't matter. All I see is 3MB/s tops.

I even tried with the powered USB hub of a monitor...

I'm wondering if this is a Micro BR in a Micro BR BR-80 shell :P

Never experienced anything like this before...

No other USB device I ever use -and I use many- shows such behaviour, no...

On the other hand, surprisingly there isn't even the slightest problem when in USB Audio mode. Anything below USB 2.0 would not be able to cope with that level of data transfer.

Strange, seriously strange...

So, how about your devices' speeds? Do you experience full on USB 2.0 speeds?

TBH, I haven't measured it. I always use the BRWC to convert track data on the fly. I noticed that track transfer take longer than in my MBR, but I assumed that was 'cause the BR80 used better quality audio thus it took more room.

I'll test it.
