Hello again. I have a SM58 clone that I wish to use for vocals on the BR80. I tried it last night into the guitar input and switched to mic on the back. However I cannot get it loud enough. I know I can turn down the recorded tracks but I lose the groove so to speak. Do I get something like this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/art-tube-mp-studio-mic-preamp will it work and how would I connect everything to the BR80. The internal mics are very good but I do like a microphone. This may have been covered before but I couldn't find anything relative when I searched.

I don't know the BR80 (I use the BR1600) - however, I thought though mic preamps are really to use with powered mikes (condenser and ribbons) - and generally speaking dynamic mikes are normally powerful enough. I'd check the input levels, and if not that - I can increase the volume via the compressor level if a little quiet. I have almost pressed the button on a mic preamp once or twice, however if you boost too much pre-BR, it can clip the input signal.

My 10c worth, anywayz.

Plug the mic into the Art, get another mic cable (1/4") and it goes from the output of the Art to the input of the BR. It will work fine.

i have an old br and with that i had to turn on plug in power to use a mic. to turn it on in the old mbr you hit utility once then the cursor button below it a few times till you see plug in power:off then use the value buttons to turn it on or off. i am sure there will be something similar with the br80.

It looks like the art is a tube emulator pre- amp it will colour the sound of the mic but should do the job.Behringer do a similar one and if I remember rightly it does have phantom power so you can run a studio condenser mic with it.Personally I would go with a cheap phantom powered mixer that you could use if you play live,if only for the ability to alter the tone.

I have ART mic pre amp with a condenser mic and it works fine on BR-80! I think that Gnasty has ART with Rode mic on BR-80, too (don't shoot me if I remember it wrong;).

Did you adjust the Input Sensitivity as described on page 114 of the BR-80 manual?

Also, you can get more gain by adjusting the level in some of the effects. For example, the LEVEL parameter of the Equalizer effect can give the signal up to 20dB of boost. The microphone preset patches (141-155) include the Equalizer effect.

I started with a SM58 and really didn't like it for recording (although it's great for gigging). Then I got a Behringer preamp with a Rode and found the preamp really noisy - I just use a standard phantom power unit now with the Rode. Volume, as 64 says depends on whether you are using any presets, input sensitivity and recording levels. I'd take off all the effects, set the input sensitivity to say +5 and the recording level as high as it will go without clipping and see how you go. It's a question of trial and error I'm afraid.

I have been and had ago with eq. Upped the gain, got the input sensitivity. and it's lots better. One thing though, I don't get the peak warning on the left corner, input level ( white line meter) but it does hit the top and stays there when singing continuously as in non stop. If I bring the recording level down so it doesn't hit the top I can't hear it

I have some AKG 217 mk 2 headphones which are very neutral and I don't think I got clipping on playback using the above settings. I am just a little concerned about the recording input level being at the max. Would I be right in saying that if the peak indicator doesn't light then all is well? Cheers for the replies.
