my brain on my ex - originates from 1996, so I break the rules once again, sort of - see details below.

Dulled

What can I tell you?
I hold nothing inside
My brain aches from lack of....
Direction
I am shriveling up inside
Having not one thing to express
And my feelings are dulled
I feel not freedom!
I feel not hate!
I feel not justice!
I feel not love!
I swim in big circles
While watching the TV
I have no confidence, ability, stability
I have no direction, no rhythm, no time
I am shriveling up inside
Having not one thing to express
And my feelings are dulled
And my feelings are dulled
And my feelings are dulled
And my feelings are dulled
I feel not freedom!
I feel not hate!
I feel not justice!
I feel not love!

This originally was done on a 4-track cassette with tracks bounced between a digital cassette deck and the 4-track to effectively expand the 4-track to about an 8 or 12-track. This was 1996. Then I pulled off the individual tracks in 2008 or so off of the original 4-track cassette. These individual tracks were then cut up into phrases and then I re-sequenced them in OpenMPT tracker. I discarded the original drums work (which I played) and bass guitar (which has way too much flange). So the drums and bass are sequenced and not performed. I dealt with timing issues and what not for a couple years. This is close to what I wanted though not 100 percent. In any case the vocals are muffled because of the guitar pedal effects I am singing through and the fact it came from cassette. The reverse echo was done, as I recall, by taking the vocal track and running the single track out to my digital delay and back into another track with the cassette being played backwards. Techniques like that also kill the frequency response but I liked the effect so...

thank you both.

Back in the 90's I was pushing my envelope beyond what I could reasonably pull off. Especially singing and playing drums. Now that I have my internet friends, like you Reg, and you Haylie, and Frank (P777) perhaps I should revisit this period. I don't know if this happens to anyone else, I tend to go... gosh what I did 20 years ago sounds so much better than the crap I'm putting out today... even with the bad recording.

The unusual composition really works for this.  It sounds almost like you synced up samples from several different songs at the same time, it sounds brilliant.

Hi Flyon90

You are very close to how this was done - except the samples (sans drums) came from one song that just had lots of parts ala prog rock.
