Here's a rough draft of a cover that I did with my BR800 tonight.   I've always liked this song.  I saw Nick Lowe singing it on Adam Hills' Australian talk show last year.  He did a bit differently to the Elvis Costello version which is what I am trying to follow here.

I've been experimenting and learning with the BR800 over the last month or so and I'm getting closer to being able to record adequately, although the better equipment might be highlighting my playing deficiencies more?  Not sure.

All the guitars are my Strat played through BR800 standard patches. I really like the guitar to bass patch.  Its fun playing bass.

All the vocals are me, sung through some slightly altered BR800 standard patches. One of them allows you to change gender.  I could hear myself singing normally, but a girl's voice was coming through the headphones - weird!!!! I'm not sure that I sound very good singing like a girl but it was fun doing it anyway.  I kept picturing myself as one of the Supremes, although I probably just sound like a drag queen.

This mix is a bit rough.  I did it through the headphones, so it may not sound great on a hi fi or computer speakers.  I'll fix it up later and repost it.  I still have to get some lead guitar onto it as well.

I hope you can see some potential in it.

Edit  7/4/2013
I've just finished off this track with a new drum track and a bit more guitar.  I tried to remix it as well.  Hopefully its now a bit more polished.  Whatever, I'm not going to do any more to it anyway.  Time to move on.

Cheers,

Ian

Sounds great to me Ian! I'm listening through headphones as my laptop speakers aren't so good but it sounds nice and clear, nicely panned. I'd be proud of that !  Good song choice too!

Nice job, Ian. Well played and the vocals sound great - both the lead vocal and The Supremes. ;)

There's a fair bit of clipping but otherwise the recording is great. The mix is very good. You just need to watch those levels. I recommend checking your mix in Audacity after mastering to see if there's any clipping, as shown in my tutorial here:

If Audacity shows a lot of clipping, then you should remaster on the BR with a slightly lower recording level.

Note (2012-03-18): I've moved the technical discussion of clipping to the Home Recording/General board so that it doesn't detract from the comments about the song.
